I know usually we would have crawfish by now in Baton Rouge. Is this year later? where can we get some live/boiled near Christmas/New year?

Be prepared

They are already saying the lack of rain will cause the prices to not just go up a little this year, but dramatically

Saw someone advertising $9 a pound live last week. Can't remember who it was, but I honestly expected worse in December

it will. A LOT of crawfish died during the drought.

Every year there is some excuse for the crawfish prices to rise. Lack of rain, too much rain, too cold, too hot...price increases this season will probably be due to the presidential elections.

And yet for the past three years crawfish prices have been pretty normal.

But yes this year it will be abnormal. Pond raised crawfish will be expensive due to no water.
But as usual, once we get into later March, prices will not be bad when the spillway crawfish hit the market.

The weather does affect agriculture.

Laf restaurants that sell boiled crawfish seasonal are open for business. I pass by LA Crawfish Time on Verot School Rd. daily and it's already packed.

Increased demand every year is the correct excuse. Prices won’t decrease unless demand does.

crawfish burrow according to the water table. Parts of Acadiana (7 surrounding Parishes) had temps over 100 degrees for 45 days with little to no precipitation. IMO, crawfish season will be fine, just like every year in the past.

Dumbest comment on a site full of dumb comments

Crawfish season isn’t Dec/Jan
It’s Feb -May /June
Last year the prices were the lowest they’ve been during lent in years
2021 were high in Feb - it was dry/cold
$ Dropped like a rock in March

It's pretty evident that as of today, a small percentage of farmers are fishing their ponds. Many will wait until Feb to start their season. Each farmer is different based on many factors including: weather, gas/diesel prices, and available labor. IMO, crawfish season starts when restaurants begin advertising and selling boiled crawfish on the menu. Perhaps it's a bit early in the season, but boiled crawfish are available today if you want to go out and eat.

the supply is so low restaurants are serving in 1# increments and the price is $10/pound

The only reason people are fishing their ponds right now is because stupid people are willing to pay high dollar for a shitty product at the moment
