Or within 30 miles or so?
I know our BBQ game is kind of weak in the Nola area so I’m looking for something good while I’m over in this area.

Big Bob Gibson in Decatur Al about 40 miles, Top Hat BBq in Blountsville is about 20 miles.
Gibson supposedly started white sauce on chicken, The Pulled Pork at Top hat is better than Gibsons.

Johnny’s BBQ is the local place. They have a weird sauce with a ton of celery seed in it. It’s one of those things the locals grew up on. Top Hat would be the closest BBQ of renown. Please don’t go to Big Bob Gibson’s. It sucks.

Did I not say the other place was better, The header says places, to tell you the truth about the only place I get BBQ is at Skylight Inn in Ayden NC on the way to the beach in July. Mainly because it’s somewhat of a family tradition. Truth to be told Cullman isn’t really a BBQ hot spot, they are more know for Chicken houses, and sweet potato’s .I make better BBQ than about 90% of places, both places I recommended included and I don’t have to pay $14 for a pulled pork sandwich.

Skip Big Bob. You won’t be missing anything. But if you go to Decatur, get some ribs and wings from Smokey C’s. Maybe not worth the 40 mile road trip, but it’s the best around the Decatur area to me.

Big Bob Gibson's....as a friend once called it, "The Mecca of Mediocrity".
Johnny's is good, but I'm local and kinda grew up on it.

It is celery seed in the sauce right? I've had it a couple of times and remember it being very pronounced.

No idea, I just get the regular red sauce, seems fine to me

As much as I love living in and eating in the state of Alabama I'll go ahead and say it: our BBQ is very average.

Top Hat is in Blount Springs, unless they've opened another location.

I'm with you brother.
Find a rub/sauce you like and the people you feed like. And tell everyone else to find their own if they don't like yours.

I put celery seed in mine but only 1/8 tsp in a 32oz recipe.
