Culver's Walleye Sandwich

I seem to recall that walleye was not considered to be a particullarly good eating fish, so I was surprised to hear that Culver's serves a walleye sandwich in season, which is apparently in the Lent timeframe.
I am in West Lafayette, IN and decided to try it. Walleye IS good eating, and I think it is better than their regular fish sandwich wich is made of North Atlantic Cod. I like Culver's regular fish offering, buy the walleye has a sweeter and more flavorful taste, and was more flaky. It is served with lettuce and tartar sauce with cheese as an option (I declined the cheese).
Good stuff. I recommend it.

I've never eaten it but my Dad (who lived in Wyoming) said it was one of the best eating fish he's ever had.

You got that backwards, walleye is one of the best fresh water fish.

In my defense, I read up on it and there is quite a bit of work involved to keep the fish from tasting "fishy". They need to be bled out right away, the meat needs to be kept between 32 and 40 degrees, and the reddish meat needs to be cut off and discarded when fileting.
At any rate, Culver's does it well.

Walleyes are definitely good eating, but as with all pike fish, they're a bitch to clean.

What? Just the opposite. Probably my favorite freshwater fish to eat. Maybe even best fish overall.

I'm on board. I thought the sandwich was terrific. You can tell it has a freshness about it because Culver's batters and fries to order. They do not cook frozen pre-battered fish filets.

I haven't seen nor heard of the walleye sandwich but will check to see if my area is offering it. I've got say I've tried the cod sandwich twice and have been underwhelmed both times. I love Culvers and think they are the most consistent bet if eating fast food to get a quality meal every time you go. Hopefully they offer it here so I can try it, never tasted Walleye before.
ETA: Looks like they do have it. I'll be trying it out this weekend for sure.

You are thinking of something different.
Walleye meat is similar to Crappie/ Sacalait/ White Perch, or bream, etc. Its a very basic white freshwater fish meat.

Ehhh... they're pretty standard to filet and nothing like a pike, which are a true PITA with the Y-bones. Walleye are part of the perch family and filet quickly (my family has spent a lot of time in the boundary waters, and I've had to filet a bunch of both... like 60+ in a day, hah).
And as for the OP: as others have said: walleye is considered to be a really "clean" tasting fish. Very well regarded as a delicacy by most midwesterners.

I really liked it. I've had the cod sandwich a number of times and it is the best regular fast food fish sandwich I've tried. I have always gotten a nice thick piece of fish that is not overwhelmed with too much breading. It is always irregularly shaped though and I leave the cheese off, so it is simply lettuce, tartar sauce, fish, and bun. The fish is the star that way.
The walleye doesn't come with cheese. I thing the fish is better tasting.

It's some of the only "local" seafood we can get around here. Fresh walleye is very good. I'll be hoping to get some later this year om a fishing trip to Lake Erie.

Culvers started in WI. When I first met my in-laws, we stopped there for lunch on way home frim airport.
They tell me walleye is an Upper-Midwest fav (1st clue). LSS, it was so bad I could only eat half the sandwich.
I do really like Culvers over all if I have to eat fast food.

Culver’s needs to be in Louisiana. I try and hit them every time I’m in NWA or Mizzou.

This board is full of folks that don’t know too much about fish.
No you don’t need to bleed Walleys.
Easy to filet no problem.
Great eating fish that don’t put up any fight when catching them

So I went to our local Culver's and got the 2 piece walleye dinner. It was 2 massive filets of fish that were very good. It was breaded in fish & chips style and it was on par with some of the way more expensive restaurants around that serve fish and chips. Would definitely recommend and will be trying the sandwich next time I go.

While I agree, and like Culver’s food, I feel like the level of service you would get from a Culver’s in Louisiana (or most places in the south for that matter) wouldn’t be on par from what you get at a Culver’s in the Midwest.

Lake Lanier in NE Georgia has a pretty decent walleye fishery. Should start spawning up the Chattahoochee soon. I don't think it's heavily fished though. People catch them by accident while fishing for other species.
Love the walleye from Culver's too.

GA DNR stocks them in several places in GA, but they seem to be hard to target specifically for us Southern people, although there's a few people on GON who have them dialed in. I'm glad I came across this topic, I need to find a Culver's around here and try this out.
