Anyone out there who can give me some direction on where to eat and where to have drinks in Dallas?

I'm headed to the Big XII Championship and am having a hard time getting advice.

Thanks.

PS: Kinda wish I was headed back to NOLA so I could hit the places I missed out on in October.

If you want NOLA type food try Doodees (spelling?) on lower Greenville.

We're staying at my sister in law's in Frisco Thursday and Friday.

Yes the game is in Arlington. I am trying to figure out where I should get a hotel room for Saturday night. I don't think I want to be out in Arlington, but maybe I am wrong on that. I am inclined to stay downtown, possibly at the Fairmount. I was also looking at a couple of places in Market Center, but I don't have a good sense of whther that may be too far removed from the action.

You DO NOT want to stay in Arlington, stay in Dallas. It's only a 20 min. drive to Arlington and the food/nightlife is slim to none out there.

Don't stay in Arlington. There are several good hotels downtown Dallas. There is also the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff about a 5 minute drive from DT..and Oak Cliff is very hip now. The Bishops Arts area of OC is very cool......and the Palomar at Mockingbird and Central Expwy (75) is close to everything.....Frisco is full of chain restaurants....its a typical boring suburban shithole. Addison and Plano have some decent restaurants and some bars. But nothing I would recommend. Its strictly a suburban crowd up there....but maybe thats what you like. What type of food you looking for?

Arlington sounds lame - that's what I figured.

I saw the Belmont House. I'll look at Palomar. What else do you recommend downtown for hotels?

I've been Frisco and Plano a few times with my family. It's fine to shop and play golf, but I agree I would not want to try and find nightlife up there. That's why we are headed downtown for Saturday night.

We can drive for food if we need to. Our plan is to go to a 5A playoff game Friday night, and will likely eat before hand.

As far as food goes, I would like to have a mixture: A good steak; a rustic/down home bbq; mexican; and/or anything else people recommend. Looking for Texas experience.

One thing I think we'll do is when we get there Thursday, head over to the the stockyards in Fort Worth. I haven't been. I like the sound of a burger at Tim Love's Love Shack and a few cold ones at the White Elephant Saloon. Any thoughts on those places?

There is a new BBQ place next door to the Belmont Hotel. It's more of a concept BBQ place rather than a traditional place. But the atmosphere is very good....it's in an old building with a enclosed courtyard in the back. My brother said the food is pretty good....not great though. The Belmont is about a 5-7 minute drive to Downtown and is right off I-30, which is the freeway to Arlington. Other Hotels Downtown are the Magnolia which is in a good location near some nightlife. Then there is The W and Hotel Zaza in Victory Park.

Steak: Del Friscos,Bob's (on Lemmon in Dallas, not the one in the burbs)...Pappa's Brothers, Al Biernet's ....I am not a steak expert though.

BBQ: Dallas doesn't have great BBQ. But Baker's Ribs on Commerce and Peggy Sue's in Snider Plaza (Highland Park).

Mexican: Mia's (not Mia Coccina) on Lemmon in Dallas (my fav), Avilla's on Maple (Hole in the wall but a foodie favorite), Chuy's on Knox in Dallas. Lots of other good ones but those are my top 3.

Other: Bolsa in Oak Cliff Bolsa is a very good "local/ Seasonal" restaurant. Very nice atmosphere if the weather is decent. Either way you're going to wait an hour or more for a table.

Louie's Pizza on Henderson. (CASH OR AMEX only) My fav pizza in Dallas and a great "old bar" atmosphere. Used to be more of a bar years ago but has become a very good pizza joint. I saw Louie yell at some customers complaining about the slow service....gave them a "frick YOU" and this gesture a few months ago. Pure awesomeness.

Bars:
Main bars areas:
1. Uptown- more douchebags per sq. ft. than any place in Dallas except West Village. But lots of bars and hot women. Gingerman is about the only place I go regularly in Uptown. A lot of people like The Loon but its not my cup of tea. I prefer more laid back bars where you can get a table and have conversation.

2. Lower Greenville- A lot of stuff has shut down recently but Libertine is good (next to Dodies...the cajun restaurant...I went to LSU with the owners son.) The Dubliner, Stan's.

3. Deep Ellum- This area was killed off by a couple of hip hop clubs that were down there a few years ago. But they are gone and the area is slowly returning. Angry Dog and Twisted Root are 2 of the best burgers in Dallas. Adair's is a good Texas Country bar. Just east of Deep Ellum is Sons of Herman Hall which is a great Texas bar and music venue. Its in an Old wood frame "house" with a bar downstairs and a giant room with hardwoods upstairs where I've seen Robert Earle Keen, Junior Brown, Dave Alvin, Alejandro Escovedo, The Gourds, Fred Eaglesmith and tons of other people. You can have a beer at the bar and take a look upstairs even if nobody is playing.

Those are good places. I would also recommend Fred's. Its funky Texas cowboy goodness.

El Asadero on Main St. near the Stockyards is a great hole in the wall mexican restaurant.

Those are some highlights. I can also point you to some good dive bars if you are interested. And the good thing about Dallas bars.....NO SMOKING! So you don't stink when you leave.

ETA: Ignore the people recommending Blue Mesa. It's a chain. It has decent food but....it's a chain.

Javier's. Dallas isn't much of a food town. Louie's is great. I like the loon for a bar.

Great. Now the hard part - choosing.

Looks like lots of authentic and local flavour to chose from.

Dive bar recommendations are welcome also.

By the way - what time do things close down on a Saturday night in Dallas?

Blue Mesa has 4 or 5 locations, all in the Dallas area... I'd hardly call that a chain.

Didn't you recommend Del Frisco's? That's more of a chain than Blue Mesa.

Bottom line is, if the food's good, who cares if it's a chain?

Chuy's is a chain and Pappa Bros is probably the only place in the Pappa's empire(Pappa's, Pappasito's, Pappadeaux's, Pappa's BBQ, Dot Coffee, Pappa Burger, I think there's more) that's worth eating at.

It's a Corporate concept chain strategically located in the burbs. The one in Dallas is in a burb type development. It is just a crappy atmosphere like all other corporate chains....very generic.

I was repeating steak advice given by others. I admitted I am not a steak guy.

He wanted local flavor which I took to mean food and atmosphere. But I also listed Twisted Root which is a concept chain....But their burgers are so good its worth it. Blue Mesa is avg IMO.

Chuy's

It is a chain but much more "Texas" in atmosphere. The Chuy's on Henderson has been there for about 15 years and was one of the first places on Knox street before it became trendy. It's in an old gas station and the garage doors are still there. They open them up when the weathers nice. That particular Chuy's is a "local" place IMO.

Dive Bars

1. Ships (lowest Greenville at Ross)
2. Lakewood Landing (Skillman @ Live Oak)
3. Bryan Street Tavern (Not really a dive, just a good bar)
4. Elbow Room (Gaston near Baylor Hospital)...Live Bryan Street Tavern, not a real dive but just a bar.
5. Amsterdam Coffee House (at the gates of fair park on Exposition) Great courtyard in the back.
6. Grapevine (on Maple) Very ecclectic clientale (gays, str8s and inbetweens)
7. Jack's Backyard (Ft Worth Avenue...hard to find.....quasi lesbo bar with str8s too.....great outside area, very austinish....not a dive)
8. Lee Harveys (southside lamar area) Not a dive anymore but still a great outside area. Its been discovered by the uptown crowd and has lost its street cred.
9. Windmill (on maple)
10. Balcony Club (in lakewood shopping area)
11. Cock and Bull (in Lakewood shopping area on East Grand???)
