Dave Portnoy's Pizza Reviews story

Portnoy reviewed a pizza place called Willy's that is a one man shop located in a gas station in Juno Beach, FL, about 1 mile from where I work. He gave the place an 8.1 score, which is very high on his scale. I saw the review about a month after it was posted, and thought I would stop by on the way home from work if it wasn't too busy.
Before Portnoy left the gas station, he asked the guy if he was ready for the increase in business and Willy told him to bring it on.
I stopped in a few days ago, and Willy's Pizza was closed. I asked the guy running the register what happened, and he said that Willy's got so much business after Portnoy posted his review on line, that Willy started having back and shoulder problems. He started taking pain killers, and is currently in the hospital because he OD'd on the pain killers.

I remember that review.
But I’m sure Willy had some type of addiction issue before Portnoy ever stepped foot in his place.
Very sad if true though.

Reminds me a bit of how Bourdain would sometimes refuse to say where he was at because he didn't want to ruin the place.

This happened a lot with those food blogs. When Vice or whoever would run a “best Burgers in America” type story, the smaller places they named would end up with so much business that local help would get overwhelmed, the long lines and waits drive away the locals because their local place was no overrun by tourists, the business would have to start cutting corners and making ahead because can’t keep up with demand, and eventually just close because they couldn’t keep up the pace.
I think they try and warm places of these type of consequences beforehand, but still sad

Not sure if it is the same problem, but John's of Bleecker Street started serving shite pizza with shite tomato sauce after their review a year or so ago.
Had it this week. shite pizza. Tasted like unseasoned crushed tomatoes out the can.
Crust was solid.

You can get some great food in gas stations. You find some really good cold who just can't run a full brick and motar but can slang magic in a back kitchen.

When this happens the company should immediately institute a time cap similar to Barbecue restaurants, at lest until the press dies down.
Tell people that this is all the food we have today and if you want it, get here early enough.

Willy had problems before the review. An increase in business isn’t going to cause physical injury.

John’s was a lot longer than a year ago, and I had it before and after the review and it was the same both times.
