I can't get speckled trout where I am but I am craving some home-cooked trout almondine.

What's a decent substitute fish? I don't want to go with catfish.

Where are you?

Go to a whole foods and ask them. I trust their seafood for quality.

I've done it with snapper, red fish and bass filets in addition to what's been suggested. I've had catfish done that way, as well.

White trout or whiting/ground mullet if you can get them. If you can't get specks, you probably can't get these either.

There’s really nothing special about speckled trout OP, as far as taste, texture, and what not goes. You could use largemouth bass, crappie (sac a lat), perch or any other fish to be honest.

The key would be to just use something fresh. You could even use some good fresh catfish probably.
