I have decided to take the wife to a bed and breakfast in Natchitoches for our anniversary this weekend. Are there any nice/good restaurants in walking distance of Front street by the river?

Mayeaux Steak & Seafood for lunch or dinner.

Maglieaux's is on the other end of front street and normally has live music outside for dinner. They have a deck overlooking the river.

The Pioneer Pub is casual and where we usually bring the kids.

Just don't order a martini. Poor bartender sent us a martini glass with 3 shots of Grey Goose.

Wife and I really enjoyed it while driving through last year. Great if the weather is nice to sit on the patio with the live music.

Maglieaux's

We go eat there once in awhile and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the river front and front street shops.

Mayeaux's is the best restaurant in town by a large margin.

Went to Natchitoches to pick up some Lasyone's frozen meat pies. Lasyone's is closed for food service due to some sort of leak, but you can call and pick up frozen pies.

Since we couldn't eat lunch at Lasyone's as planned, we went to Mayeaux's, having read about it on this board. It was a bit of mixed bag.

Two of us had decent bloody Marys. The other person had water and said it had a very strange off putting taste, so she ordered tea.

One person had the blackened gator for an app and enjoyed it. The other two of us had fried and sauteed crab fingers. Both were okay. The fried came with a remoulade sauce that didn't taste like remoulade but was a good paired with the fingers.

One person had the salmon topped with herbed sauteed shrimp with a baked sweet potato and side of broccoli and rice casserole. Their casserole type sides are enough for two people. She enjoyed her dish other than broccoli casserole which was okay.

Other person had the chicken and sausage gumbo and didn't eat much of it. It had strange flavor. I tasted it and it was not good. I couldn't figure out what the off putting flavor was, but I wouldn't have eaten it.

I had fried soft shell crabs. There were 3. They were a little small, but full without many legs. They put them on lettuce leaves so the undersides were just steamed and greasy. They came without any sauce at all, so I ordered the tarter sauce which was not likely made in house. Sides were the squash casserole and creamed spinach which, again, were enough for two or three people. I didn't detect much, if any, squash flavor. This was an odd soft sweet cornbread dish that wasn't very good. The spinach was okay. This was a LOT of food and I couldn't begin to make much of a dent in it. I stuck with two of the small crabs for the most part.

I asked for water after finishing the bloody Mary. My goodness, that water was awful. It tasted sort of like watered down flat club soda. I don't know what was up with that, but it's hard to screw up water unless maybe Natchitoches water has an issue.

We shared the buttermilk pie for dessert which was served warm in one of the casserole dishes without crust, so it was more of a custard like preparation. It came with vanilla ice cream on the side. It was tasty and just okay.

Didn't see any steaks being served, but the poboys that went by looked good. Maybe some of us ordered wrong.

Everything was decorated for Christmas, so it looked pretty and festive. All the B&B's were decorated as well. It's a great time of year to see the city.

Thanks for the report. I've yet to try it myself but plan to give it a shot, along with the sort of modern sounding Mexican place that took over the Maglieaux's space.

I googled "Natchitoches water" and found an article indicating they have the same problems as Shreveport with an ancient H2O system that they are too broke to fix. We're all going to be Jackson MS soon enough.

Why does the City of Natchitoches water continue to be brown?

At least it wasn’t brown, but I’d expect a restaurant to have some sort of filter for water especially if there’s a potential issue.

Mayeaux’s has the best steaks. Pioneer pub has the best atmosphere. Mammas and Pappa’s dropped off a lot with the new owners. The commissary is out of town and a really cool place. Semi limited menu. Better than bar food, but less than fine dining. Atmosphere is cool. Sit outside in good weather. The place that is in maglieaux’s location won’t be around long. Really high prices and very meh food. Flying heart brewery has good pizza and sandwiches. Peggy’s has the absolute best pizza in the state. Get it to go.
