Like actually in downtown or in the surrounding areas?
Current favorites of ours for date nights/special occasions are Navy Blue (Rice Village), Little's Oyster Bar (River Oaks) and Ostia (Montrose).
All three of the above are within a short drive/uber.
I guess actually in downtown I'd say Vic and Anthony's, Pappa Bros, Nancy's Hustle in East Downtown, Xochi.

You need to narrow it down a bit. Houston has everything. Type of cuisine? Fancy or Casual? Budget?

Hugo’s.
Upscale Mexican.
Get the duck with mole’ poblano sauce.

Nancy's Hustle - Eado - trendy, modern American bistro
Xochi - downtown - delicious, upscale Mexican
B & B Butcher - very near downtown, my favorite steakhouse
Hearsay Gastro Pub - I'm sure I'll get bashed for this because the food is just kind of normal American. I just have always thought this place has a really cool vibe. It sort of looks like Harry Potter to me.

Wife and I have had several good experiences there. Atmosphere, service, and cocktails are all good. Food isn't exceptional, but still good.

Dude is asking for a downtown upscale type (wants to take the wife somewhere "nice") place. That's almost as specific a request as one can get for a place as huge as Houston. Certainly more specific than most of the requests one sees here.
It's weird the things people will choose to bust people's balls over.

The Mobile area has what I consider bad Mexican food. So my travels to Houston on business 5-6 times a year are greatly anticipated on my end. I really like The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation Street. I absolutely love their fajitas, grilled quail and seafood dishes. The Mexican restaurant right next door, El Tiempo Cantina, is equally good, but has a few other interesting offerings I like. Gosh I can smell the mesquite smoke in the parking lot just thinking about those two places. I also love Hugo’s for Mexican food. Their menu has an entirely different type of Mexican offerings, more upscale dining, and very tasty to put it mildly. Apparently I’m in the mood for Mexican this morning because Houston is one of my favorite big cities due to the variety of delicious restaurants they have. I’d hit those three up since you are going to be there for an extended amount of time. I can 100% guarantee others will chime in with my favorites on steak, BBQ, Asian, and all the other wonderful restaurants in that great city. The residents that have lived in that area for a significant amount of time know a ton of places I've yet to try because I don’t know about them. I’d have a tough time keeping the weight off if I lived over there.

I’ve heard Brennan’s of Houston is nice.

Ended up making a reservation at Vic and Anthony's. Thanks everyone for the recommendations. Will have to try one of the upscale Mexican joints next time

MF Sushi is some of the best I've ever had. In the Museum District.

Calm down Karen. There are upscale restaurants for all cuisine types in Houston.

Brenner’s. And yes it’s great.

There is a Brennan’s and Brenner’s here.
There are much better meals in town than both at those price points.

I prefer B&B, but I have not had a disappointing meal from Brennars on the Bayou.
