Drago’s Closing
KLFY - Drago’s Seafood Restaurant will close its Lafayette location at 3151 Johnson Street, Drago’s, a New Orleans based restaurant, will be closing its Johnston Lafayette location on Feb. 17. The location originally opened its doors on Sept. 15, 2017. A dinner only menu will be offered until the doors are closed for good at the close of business on Feb. 17.
The restaurant’s closure is said by Cvitanovich as part of the large wave of eateries closing their doors due to financial and other challenges, like an increase in unmanageable food price.
“We came to Lafayette with great confidence that we could enhance the seafood offerings in Acadiana,” Cvitanovich said. “The combination of a slow start, followed by Covid, and then the dramatic increase in food and operating costs was more than we could overcome.”
Not to mention, Bobby Silor cursed the location.

That location has been a nightmare for restaurants

The restaurant scene is crazy in Lafayette. 3 close and 5 new ones open up.

Drago's making it 6 years there was a record of sorts

My best guess is that Dragos was either the 6th or 7th restaurant to fail at this location

Agree. I thought they had survived the threshold minimum time there and were on track to actually make it.
Full disclosure: We ate there twice.

Yea... it's just straight cursed. Both Mellow Mushroom and Drago's couldn't survive there.

Burger Tyme across the street is also for sale. It was never going to make it because it wasn't the original recipe (Peter Boulet- PJ's in Crowley owns it).

Lafayette is a very fickle market and Lafayette is a town where locals rule. A restaurant can serve anything they want, if they don't have buy in from the Lafayette, locals only crowd, they'll fail.
Neither Mellow Mushroom or Drago's are Lafayette based.
MM couldn't dream of snagging loyalty away from Deano's, Pizza Village or Pizza Inn. And Deano's has two successful locations.
Same with Drago's. Don's may have an inferior product, but they're an established Lafayette favorite.

What restaurant had the shortest tenure in that spot? Was it the Mexican place opened by that guy Gabe from Lafonda? I think that place was open a few months.

Bako's and it was terrible. I was eating there when my wife went into labor.

Don's has a great atmosphere. Walking into Drago's Lafayette felt like walking into a fancy Ryan's Steakhouse with operating room lighting.

I've always been surprised it made it this long, bummer it didn't work out, Mr. Tommy is good people. We went twice when it first opened and though we don't go out for seafood very often it was never even on the radar, we always seem to end up at Uncle Ts or Don's occasionally. Dragos had similar offerings to both places, in a location that always struggled, and were priced higher than both of those, so there's really not much of a draw to go outside of name recognition.
Additionally, I always found it funny that Dragos kept things like red beans & rice, etouffee, shrimp creole, pastalaya, fettuccini, etc on the menu, all $20+. I'm sure that stuff moves well in their NOLA market that has much more tourist traffic but you can find all that stuff in a random gas station plate lunch here for like $9.

Sounds exactly like alot of people's explanation of why Cochon does really well in NOLA but didn't last long in Lafayette
As mentioned above, Lafayette is a very fickle market

With at least 2-3 of those new ones being another pizza restaurant?

Sounds like the old Calendar's location in BR on Perkins. That thing has been more restaurants than I can name.

Wasn’t Toucan’s the original restaurant located there?
