Went out to eat twice this weekend, Le Foret on Saturday night and Arnaud's for brunch today. There was no stated dress code at Le Foret, but I was suprised to see several people in jeans and 1 guy in shorts. Mostly jackets with a couple of ties in there, but overall more casual than I imagined.

For Arnaud's, however, I was more than surprised to see guys in flip-flops and shorts, lots of t-shirts and jeans, etc. I know it was brunch, but I assumed it would be a little more formal than that.

Does this mean I can start ditching the coat and get comfy when I go out in New Orleans from now on?

When it gets this hot, the code gets loose

Makes sense, I think the damn heat index while we were walking to dinner last night was 106, and that was at 8 pm.

I think many restaurants want diners. They'd probably prefer to monitor the dress more closely, but some folks don't want to be all scuzzed up in the summer heat to eat. Shorts is extreme for some places, but personally, I don't care what other folks wear as long as I don't see body parts I prefer not see and as long as they don't have body odor. What someone else wears will rarely affect my dining enjoyment. I can tell you that I'm not getting dressing in cocktail party attire in the heat, period. If that's required, I'm not going. I have to dress up enough for work.

By the way, how was Le Foret. I'd love to see a review on geaux.com dining.

Agreed, my brunch today didn't taste any different because the guy next to me was in flip-flops. Just caught me off guard.

I thought it was awesome. It was my first foray into "fine dining", and overall I enjoyed the hell out of it. My wife and I did the tasting menu, and other than a realization that we really don't like foie gras, it was all pretty damn good. I'll get a full review up soon.

I look forward to reading it. I really enjoyed my meal there and look forward to going back. I've thought about it, ever since.

I don't believe in coat and tie to go to a restaurant, but this is just fricking tacky and lowbrow.

Yes, it is, but it wouldn't ruin my meal or the enjoyment of my evening.

Arnaud's for brunch

I was in shorts and a T shirt. It was 100 degrees and we didn't know we were going to eat at Arnaud's. I don't see the big deal, hell the other tables were down right loud and obnoxious.

Sorry my T shirt lessened your experience. I saw a guy waiting outside Stanley with cashmere suit on, really? I wore nice clothes to Patois on Saturday, but why on earth would I wear pants to walk around the 1/4 all day?

I'm guessing I saw you Arnaud's since there aren't that many tables in the dining room. Sorry again if it bothered you. I kind of felt a tinge of guilt as we entered the dining room, but we were hungry, hot and thirsty - so I didn't let it stop me.

ETA: I was NOT in flip flops.

were you also the guy next to me in Ruth Chris' on Friday night in a fishing t-shirt and khaki shorts? His date had on a cami and shorts as well? One big WTF...not like you have to walk to Ruth's from the parking lot in BR like you have to at restaurants in NOLA....

Didn't make my food taste any less great, but still annoying that one can't even wear pants and a polo.

You were right about Arnaud's brunch, even though we ordered a bit strangely.

I got the Hussarde and the wife got the Adrienne. They were prepared well, but both were a little out of our comfort zone (guess the wife doesn't like tomato sauce on eggs, and I'm not much of a beef gravy (Marchand de Vin) fan on eggs). I have no idea WTF the Crepes Suzette is supposed to be, that was just weird.

So you're saying my "I fish naked" t-shirt didn't do it for you?

Seriously though, I have no problem with shorts at brunch, depending on the place. I agree that for dinner, a pair of khakis and a polo isn't asking too much. Screw sporting a jacket at this time of year though!

This has pissed me off to no end.

I have repeatedly seen shorts in places such as Brennan's, etc.

No. Keep the cultural tradition and respect for the food alive!

How is dressing up respecting the food?

Pretty soon, you're going to just wear your PJs and slippers.

Always use Walmart to judge the future. They are about twenty years ahead of the times as far as dress is concerned.

You know, some things are ridiculous, like wearing a suit and tie, or a dress and high heals to an LSU football game in late August or early September, but good Lord have I seen a dressing down in my short time on this planet. I remember as a kid everybody wearing their dress clothes to church, and now it's shorts, flip flops, and an old t-shirt. Same thing goes for eating out. It was an occassion not all that long ago, but not so much anymore I guess.

Shorts and t shirt at a nice restaurant is just bullshite. Really.

Now this time of year, I won't wear a jacket except for maybe one or two places and maybe not then. But at least a decent shirt and lightweight pants.

For a 105 degree day, at brunch? We didn't have reservations or even plans to eat there. I remember glass's post about Arnauds, so we walked down to see if we could get a seating. They let us in and took our $120 as a trade for brunch (They seemed really happy to seat us also). My wife looked pretty darn hot in her dress, so maybe it made up for me wearing a T shirt.
