Definitely Keller’s for me. I like strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, and lemon from there.

Navarre's Bakery in Springfield is my go to for the best king cake.
2nd choice would be Berrytown Produce in Hammond

if you like lemon flavor the lemon cream cheese is legit. They dont have it often(I guess lemon isnt a popular king cake flavor) so you have to usually order it.

Hi Do and Haydel's for me.

quote:I can only assume the downvotes are from people who have never tried it because Keller's KC and the Pouparts Traditional KC are up there with any I've ever had from South LA. They are both almond flavored, which I thoroughly enjoy, so that may have some influence. My personal preference as I've had some of the other highly touted that have a bit too much nutmeg in them (for my taste) to enhance the cinnamon flavor but wind up overpowering it.

I'd assume it's from people that grew up in NOLA area and like what we consider "normal" king cakes

I get that, just not the downvotes for it I guess.
Downvotes should be for the donuts or the ones stuffed with pudding (bavarian creme). Kidding (kind of).
Everyone has their own favorite though. If you like a donut, then enjoy your donut. If you like 'NOLA traditional' then enjoy it. If you like French traditional, enjoy it. If you like other variants, then enjoy it while the season lasts. You got 7 weeks to enjoy it before it goes away until Kings Day 2026, so get those calories in before lent.

I prefer the really sweet ones like Randazzos or Antoines for just a regular king cake.
Not traditional wise, there was an old post here that recommended some kind of chantilly king cake that was pretty freakin awesome. Can't remember the name of the bakery though.

Jack Rouses king cakes were the most improved last year. Not sure what they did but last year their king cakes tasted way better!
I personally think king cakes should be judge on plain cinnamon. Once you start adding all kinds of fillings, it changes. Cannatas Ooey Gooey Snickerdoodle is one of my favorites.
1. Sugarlove
2. Dong Fong
3. Caludas
That was my top 3 plain cinnamon from last year.

1/23 TD King Cake thread
Couldn’t find it ( the ‘24 thread) but I seem to recall last year someone was saying there’s a good one in Cutoff also, it was Cajun Pecan House: https://cajunpecanhouse.com/goods/#king-cakes
Need to swing by there and try it.
