Red beans and rice became a traditional dish on Mondays in New Orleans because it made use of the ham bone left over from Sunday dinner. Monday was typically wash day, and the beans could be simmered for a long time on the back of the stove while the laundry was being done.

Because Mondays were laundry day for the house ladies and Red Beans having to soak all day made for an easy dish to cook up.

Eta: Auburn Tiger beat me to it.

I put butter in mine.

Back in the day, Monday was wash day, so you could put the beans on the stove and let'em cook all day while doing the wash.

I grew up seeing (yeah, I'm that old) my Mama do that. Her two old black washpots are now planters.

The OP discussing why Red Beans and Rice are served on Monday...

"I'll be honest. I don't think anyone actually knows why anymore. Scholars maintain the reasoning was lost hundreds of years ago"

Red Beans

Are the women putting period juice in the beans now, or is that just spaghetti?

Red beans is a Louisiana thing. Other areas featured pinto beans, navy bean, or lima beans. A pat of butter is pretty standard for seasoning along with salt, pepper, etc. The tradition started because women were busy with the wash on Monday and a pot of beans could be easily jazzed up with the ham hock from Sunday dinner. The tradition was kept alive during the 70s when many families ate at least one meatless meal per week in response to rising prices.

Restaurants were typically closed on Monday’s.

Red beans and rice with cornbread, sausage or pork chops was good ola fashion home cooking comfort food

False.

The oil slick stops the starch from allowing the pot to easily boil over.

I doubt 2lbs of butter would affect the taste.

Monday was laundry day for mom. Let the beans simmer all day, get the laundry done.
