I'm sure this has been discussed but my quick search didn't turn it up, so...

On my last boil last season about 1 in 10 of the bugs had a real strong fishy taste. Worse yet, I couldn't tell by sniffing; only when eating.

What do the experts say?

They were dead before boiled.

If I had a sack with 10% of them dead, I'd be pissed and heading back to the dealer------that's 4 lbs. in a 40 lb. sack.

I got several sacks last year and the most I had dead was around 10 in one sack. Most had 5 or less. Oh, and none of the ones that made the boil had any fishy taste.

Liquid crab boil and salt help hide the fishiness, cut back on either and you’ll regret it.

From my latest knowledge that I gained on Meateater's podcast called the Crawfish Pond, they spend time with 2 guys from south LA discussing lots of things, including a little bit of crawfishing as a hobby versus commercial (worth listening to)

supposedly, when catching crawfish, you can use pellets or dead fish. If you use dead fish, good chance the crawfish will smell/taste like fish. They suggested purging more than usual might help this.

They also suggested that spillway (non-pond) crawfish are more likely to be caught with fish.

Hope this helps.

All I've ever used to catch crawfish is beef melt, which for the unknowing is a cow's spleen. Bloody as hell to attract the crawfish and tough texture that holds up well as a bait.

Interesting my family had crawfished for 40 plus years and have never used beef melt. It was dry bait and fish in the early days and now it’s only fish. Also I believe that rice field pond raised crawfish vs spillway crawfish have a huge difference which i never realized until I moved away from South Louisiana.

I depends on how long they've been dead, obviously.

Fishy crawfish are dead, not washed properly, not seasoned well, or a mixture of the foregoing, in my experience.

My best buds nanny has a pond and we get crawfish from him. For some reason the crawfish that come out of that pond are really strong tasting. I just buy them now.

Were the tails sticking straight out?

Did you purge?

There were a higher-than-normal number of dead ones in that bag. That's probably it. More likely that than the price change....

Thanks, all.

In my experience, this time of year the crawfish generally have a higher death rate before getting to the consumer. Shells are really soft which provides no protection when being transported in sack.

If 5-10 sacks of softer shelled crawfish are piled up in a truck, a lot of the crawfish in the bottom sacks will not make it.
