I have to go to Canton, MS for 3 days next week and was wondering if there are any places I should try and others I should avoid?

I don't know of anywhere good in Canton to eat, but there are tons of good places to eat in the surrounding Jackson area.

Eat in Madison.
Or at Renaissance in Ridgeland. My cousin works at Mint, which is a great restaurant there.

We went to the Mermaid on the lake up there... good casual food and pretty setting...hot girls were all over.
Local 463 in madison has been getting great reviews. You could also head up to Greenwood in the Delta for Lusco's, Delta Grill, Giardinias, Crystal Grill....great food to be had if you head north or south of Canton...Canton itself is a nice little town, but I have yet to have a good meal there.

I had a good meal in Canton back in '82 or '83. A bud and I were on our way to the State game in Jackson and as we passed through the low rent end of town, we had to stop at a red light. A black dude was selling BBQ out of a 6 ft by 6 ft trailer on the side of the road. He was cooking everything there in a barrel pit. We had the munchies terribly bad, so I whipped over my bad arse '79 RX 7,
, and we placed an order for...rib sammiches. Never had one before...sounded good at the time...and they were. But, it was damn hard to eat...2 pieces of white bread with about 4 ribs worth of a slab in the middle(bones and all)...damn good, but a bitch to eat and drive. Google Penn's Fish House and see if they are still in that area...may be the best meal within 15 minutes of town.

Penn's is solid...I think they would do well in LA...fast food catfish.

The original joint is a "sit down" place out east of town just off Hwy 43...first place I ever had fried dill pickles...probably @1970.

I don't think I have ever eaten in Canton as much as I am out there, besides at the country club. I would drive back towards Jackson and get something. There are tons of places to eat just north of Jackson in Madison and Ridgeland. Blue Moon Cafe on W. Jackson Street is decent for lunch. They have some of the best potato salad I have ever had. It is a sour cream based potato salad. They are only open for lunch though. I just got back from Joe's Diner on Old Fannin and it was awesome. Fratesi's is pretty legit on Lake Harbor. I ate there last night. There are a lot of awesome places to eat around Jackson.

You absolutely must go to Hamil's for lunch one day. It is off of Hwy. 51 in Madison, about 10 miles south of Canton. For $8.50 (which includes your drink) you'll get to eat the best buffet in Mississippi. Smoked meats and country cooking, all homemade and the owner actually works in the kitchen, so you know the quality is there. You won't see a sign, so ask one of the locals because everybody knows where it is.
