So I always order bourbon old fashioneds when I am out for dinner or drinks, and it always seems like theirs are just a little bit better than mine. I buy the exact same bourbon and have bought more expensive bitters (just bought some cocoa bitters), but I think that they may use either a different technique or ingredients. I'm considering getting a better demerara syrup and possibly a cocktail smoking setup.

So what am I doing wrong?

Even a ham sandwich tastes better when someone else makes it.

You're overthinking it. Sure, you can use all the things mentioned, but an Old-Fashioned is a simple drink, with simple ingredients.

For me:
Favorite bourbon or rye (2 to 3 oz)
One sugar cube
3 to 5 dashes Peychaud Bitters
2 cocktail cherries
1"wide slice orange peel rind
1/2 oz water or soda water
1 large ice cube

Place sugar cube in glass, dash on bitters and pour in 1/2 oz liquor and muddle sugar cube till it begins to dissolve. Add remaining liquor, water and stir to dissolve sugar completely. Add large ice cube and stir to chill. Garnish with cherries and give the orange rind peel a twist over the drink and rim the glass with the white side of the peel and place in glass.

Sip and enjoy!

Thanks for the detailed post. Here's what I do differently than your recipe:

- I use simple syrup instead of a sugar cube
- I mix the simple syrup, cherry, and bitters first, then I add the bourbon and mix some more, then add ice cube and orange rind
- I don't add additional water, I assume the big ice cube is going to provide that when it melts

No water in an old fashioned!

Simple syrup
Bitters
Rye
Large single cube
Cherry on top
Orange rind that is smeared across the top and put in drink

Family old fashioned recipe:

Dash of Angostura bitters

Simplicity and less sugar is key

Simple syrup

Simple syrup is a concentration of sugar and water.

Not arguing the point, just that I prefer to start with cube sugar and add water to that. 6 one way, 1/2 dozen the other, right?

1 oz of water vs 2 tablespoons of simple syrup?

I said no to water because I think it directly dilutes the drink.

That said, we all do what we enjoy

Also

When I use a sugar cube I muddle that with bitters not water.

All this talk has me craving an old-fashioned. Made one and I actually use what equates to a half ounce of water. Used Penelope 112° proof bourbon. I find higher proof bourbons provide a nice kick to an otherwise semi sweet cocktail. Enjoy fellas.

Bitters can make a difference. Ask the place where you like the drink the most what bitters they use. That’s how I found Boker’s Bitters at a bar in Jackson. I also learned to add the sugar to the bourbon and mix it until it dissolves. The other key is the orange peel twist and run around the rim.

Simple is when I pour good bourbon into a glass and drink it. I'll keep the sugar for dessert.

Right. It's tough to screw up bourbon over ice. This thread was about making a great old fashioned, so it's entirely on topic. Your post was not.

This is the perfect recipe for me and it’s very simple.

2 oz. rye or bourbon
1 oz. simple syrup
3 dashes angostura bitters
3 dashes orange bitters

I make my own ice in a small ice chest and cut it with a bread knife. There’s a popular YouTube video you can find about it. I’ll take the cube of ice out a little ahead of time so I don’t shock it and crack it when I pour everything onto it.

Sometimes I’ll steep a bag of earl grey tea with my simple syrup and it gives it a unique flavor. I also sometimes throw in a luxardo cherry. Just depends on my mood.

Try using a brown sugar simple syrup. Took my recipe to the next level.
