Planning a semi long road trip back home to NOLA and want to stop and see the Civil War sites in Vicksburg. Two days there tops. Local cuisine preferred. Unless, of course, it's something unique. Also, We will be driving from Denver, so, anything on the Tulsa to I40 to 530 route that's a must try is really appreciated. Planning trip for mid to late spring.

Last time I was over there, we ate at Rusty’s. I had stuffed soft shell crab and the wife had shrimp and grits. Would recommend.

I don’t know if you’ve researched it, but roughly 1/4 of the park is closed due to the roads being washed out. You can still see plenty, but if you’ve got any interest in seeing where those Yankees Grant and Sherman camped, you’ll have to park and go on foot. Even then you aren’t supposed to walk back to Grant circle as this is where some of the worst washing occurred.
Lunch:
-Tomato Place. Roadside fruit stand that serves food. Good burgers, fries, fried green tomato BLT is my go to. Be sure to get a smoothie (heavenly strawberry or blueberry are my favorites)
-Main Street market. Sandwiches are good, their daily special never disappoints.
-walnut hills. Blue plate special is what I usually go for. Known for fried chicken, but I’ve never had anything bad there.
-bovina cafe in Bovina serves plate lunches and used to be my go to lunch spot. It changed ownership a couple of years ago and isn’t what it used to be, but still good.
-Rusty’s. This is where a lot of visitors eat. Fried green tomatoes are one of his specialties. Also good seafood.
-Billy’s. Italian restaurant in a strip mall, but surprisingly good. Not fancy, upscale Italian, but strip-mall Italian.
-gumbo pot. Seafood/cajun cuisine.
-toneys. Plate lunch, also seafood
-tamale place. If you like tamales be sure to get some of these to take home with you. Also the tamale supreme (tamale covered with chili, retried beans, nacho cheese, onions, and jalapeños) keeps River Region’s CVU well stocked.
Supper:
-Rusty’s
-cottonwood. Hippy dippy brewery/fancy-pants pizza place. Pizza is good, but if you go here get the patty melt. Also open for lunch on fridays and weekends.
-10-south. Go for the views and the drinks, but I am not a fan of the food.
-beechwood. This or Rusty’s would be my go to. Best burger in town is the beechwood burger. Known for their steaks. The classic with fried shrimp is always a hit.
-anchuca. More upscale. In an antebellum home.
-walnut hills
If I had 2 days (4 meals) here I would say:
Rusty’s, Beechwood with beechwood being first choice for supper.
Walnut hills, tomato place (due to its uniqueness) for lunch.
Drinks at 10-south or cottonwood.

Also, the tomato place is not air conditioned so if this is a deal breaker I would go to Main Street as a lunch choice after walnut hills.

Drove through there and stopped at Walnut Hills per the F&D Board recommendation. The fried chicken was top notch, but the venue and atmosphere were incredible.

Please report back on the historical stuff. I’ve always wanted to visit the battle sites in Vicksburg and never have.

The tamale place is good. At least I remember it to be .
HD Gibbes is great for a steak at an out of the way place.

The wife and I took a two night getaway over to Vicksburg a couple years ago.
Someone suggested Rusty's so we decided to go there the first night. It was so good we went back the second night.

Beechwood
Fried shrimp washed down with cold draft beer from their bar is divine.

Rusty’s is good. Cottonwood has great pizza, sandwiches, and drinks. Not a huge fan of Sally’s

Forgot about the Tomato Place. Very different, but a fun experience. And good food.
Also, when my wife and I spend the night in Vicksburg, we tend to stay at the Cedar Grove Inn. It’s nice for a change of pace, and they usually have a pretty good breakfast.
ETA: well damn, never mind, it looks like Cedar Grove was sold at the end of September. Not sure if they are still open and accepting reservations or not.
