Ham and onion sandwiches

I'd never eaten a ham and onion sandwich until I started reading James Lee Burke's "Dave Robicheaux" novels a little over 20 years ago. In every book he had a scene with Dave in the kitchen making himself a ham and onion sandwhich and a glass of iced tea. He'd take the food out to the picnic table in his back yard and eat it. I made myself one back then and I've been eating them ever since. Simple and awesome.

What are the specifics of this? Just white bread, deli ham, and sliced raw onion?

I'm not really a fan of the onion

I've made them with French bread, whole wheat bread, 12 grain bread, potato rolls, pretty much any bread you like.

I'm a fan of the books and the sandwich. He had the three legged raccoon named Tripod.
Read the old Lawrence Sanders Deadly Sin books, 1-4 with Edward X Delaney as the NY Police Sargeant. He eats "wet" sandwiches like tomato only over the sink and "dry" sandwiches like pastrami at his kitchen table. Great old murder mysteries with some good meals thrown in.

People make sandwiches WITHOUT raw onion?
Only thing better would be grilled onions AND raw onions.

quote:Yes! I notice Tripod hasn't been in the last few books, but I don't remember him saying the racoon had died. Just like the old guy Batiste who ran Dave's bait shop. He just disappeared from the series without mention.

Well Batiste was old from the beginning. They were always filling the coolers with ice and making coffee. I'm a fan of Cletus. Great series.

I've never eaten and ham and onion sandwich but half an hour ago I made a sammich by chopping up some leftover chicken breasts. The chicken looked kinda dry. So I took out some leftover onion soup and put about 5 tablespoons full in the microwave and poured the onion soup over the chicken. It was great.

All his books seem the same to me. Same sandwich, spool table, dead fish smell from the bayou, etc.
