Looking for a good recipe for hamburger steak smothered down with gravy onions. What you got? Planned on serving over rice or mashed potatos.

I don’t have a good recipe but I can suggest going with mashed potatoes & field peas as a side

This recipe is killer. Notice that the patties are not mixed with anything. Let the beef flavors speak for themselves with a little salt and pepper seasoning. Also, if you can find the jumbo 1/2lb patties pre made at the grocery store, just buy those to save a little time. Plus, they are uniform in shape and super flat so you can get a solid sear.
We make this at least twice a month at our house. Everyone loves it.
Ingredients
2 lb Ground Beef, 80/20
1 Yellow Onions, large
1 can Beef Broth
1 cup Water
1/2 Stick Butter
1/4 cup Flour, all purpose
1 tsp Cajun Seasoning
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
Salt & Pepper, to season patties
Preparation Steps
1. Form the ground beef into 4 large patties. Generously salt and pepper the outside of the patties and set aside.
2. Heat a large cast iron Dutch oven on med high heat with just a splash of vegetable oil. When oil is hot, sear the patties two at a time. Your goal is just to put a crust on the patties, not to cook them through.
3. While patties are searing, chop the onions. When all patties are seared well, remove them from pot and add onions.
4. Use onions to sweat and deglaze the fond on the bottom of the pot. Stir and caramelize onions for approximately 20 minutes until well browned.
5. Add 1/2 stick of butter to onions and let it melt. Then add the flour and stir well. Stir as long as you would like until the color is dark brown. Times may vary but about 10-20 minutes is about right.
6. When color is good, add 1 can of beef broth and 1 cup of water. Stir well and add Cajun seasoning and garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a light boil and then reduce heat to simmer for 20 minutes.
7. After 20 minute simmer, add the patties back in, bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to simmer and cover for an hour. Stir once or twice. Serve with rice or potatoes.

I like the pioneer woman recipe and the cajun ninja guy’s recipe. both are very solid, with pioneer woman being slightly tastier and better in my opinion.

No recipe but if you're out and about, Cafe at the Square on 500 St. Charles (by the Federal Reserve building) has an amazing one.

This right here is key to a good hamburger steak. You can season them any way you want, or not even at all, as long as you let them cook in the gravy and not on the frying pan, and they will be great.

I've done The Cajun Ninjas recipe a few times and it turned out great. Cajun Ninja Hamburger Steak

My best results for hamburger steak always involve coarse grinding the meat myself (usually something like some cheap ribeyes that are too thin to cook properly) and searing in a red hot cast iron to medium rare. Served with a gravy from browned down onions and shrooms, mashed potatoes (or rice) and corn.

This thread actually prompted me to make this tonight. I followed my recipe above exactly and as always, it came out freaking amazing.

So I cooked the cajun ninja version of this last night. Came out awesome. Highly recommend

I actually made it for lunch today with sautéed red onions and mushrooms to go with the brown gravy. Got caught without real potatoes and had to make do with tots and a can of green beans

Used JibbaJabba’s recipe and added some sliced mushrooms while sautéing onions. Was outstanding, thanks for posting.

Made this tonight. Really need to season the meat before making patties imo otherwise it’s just bland ole ground chuck
