Are they basically the same thing other than one has a bun and the other doesn't?

We have more seasoning in our hamburger steak and make a very thin gravy with it. Also make them thick, as opposed to pressed burgers on a hot cast iron.

Perfect. Thanks to all.

That is about what I thought. I was planning on making mashed potatoes and gravy with sauteed onions to go with my "burgers" and calling it hamburger steak.

Hamburger is the 'sandwich'.

Hamburger patty is the patty by itself.

Hamburger steak has a sauce/gravy.

Not a whole lot of difference other than the fact that I don't mix beef for burgers with anything, and I mix quite a few things into my hamburger steak. And obviously -- gravy.

For me it is seasoning and the gravy that makes them different. I add a French Onion soup packet into my hamburger meat when making the steaks. For a regular hamburger I just season well with salt and pepper, maybe add a little ranch packet mix to change it up but good ole salt and pepper will usually do.

I use a better grade of meat in a hamburger steak, usually ground sirloin 93/7.

A shite load of difference. Now a hamburger patty and a hamburger steak, pretty similar.

Color me perplexed by these responses. My hamburger patties and hamburger steak patties do not resemble each other, nor are very similiar other than the fact that the main ingredient is ground beef.

I do understand, from said responses, why my wife hates eating hamburger steaks n some restaurants when they serve the same hamburger patty under gravy & onions that they serve between the bun. Makes sense now. I simply thought those reataurants sucked.

Appears most dont do much different. Hmm. Hate it for yallz.

My families (the best in the world for anyone wondering) hamburger steak recipie would obviously appear closer to a meatloaf patty to some of u people. Onions. Eggs. White Bread. Herbs. Stock. Ground Beef. Etc. Seared then smothered. Boom

Hamburgers are lightly seasoned ground beef, pattied then seared and served.

Not same planet

I like to add some egg whites, onions, salt and pepper. Egg whites keep it more moist. You can broil grill or cook it in a pan.

For gravy I sauté some onions, mushrooms then add water and Minors Au Jus then thicken slightly with corn starch. Not so much that its thick like a gravy but not so thin its like Au Jus if that makes any sense. Served over the steak and mashed potatoes with some garlic French bread.

Looked briefly online and they sell the Minors here for 12 bucks a bottle. A bottle will make more than a gallon of Au Jus. That minors is good stuff. Not sure if you can get it in a store.

LINK

The best was back in the day (late 80's) at Piccadilly with their Au jus. Getting hungry just talking about it.
