We’re birthday party planning and we ask our daughter what she wants for her birthday and she says an ice cream maker. She had homemade ice cream at a friends house a couple weeks ago and it changed her life! We usually keep some blue bell in the freezer but she wants to maker her own. Can any of y’all recommend a good ice cream maker for like $150 or less? We’d like to give her the ingredients to make her first batch. Can y’all help me with a good but simple vanilla ice cream recipe?

I’ll follow this thread because I’m interested in the same. Only thing I’ll say is that I’d consider going to a farmers market and finding some fresh, really ripe strawberries or peaches. But that’s just me.

We probably will get some berries or peaches eventually. Just want to let her start off simple and go from there.

I remember back in the day we'd have to take turns cranking that handle. It was a tedious process but well worth it.

The ice cream makers that use the frozen bases make very good ice cream. And they are inexpensive- easy to find around $50

This is a good review of the different types and the Cuisinart is recommended in that category.

If she really gets into it, she might want one with a compressor later on so that you can make one batch after another. With the other kind, you have to refreeze the base for 24 hours. Or buy extra bases.

I would suggest she try a Philadelphia Style first because it's simple with no need to make an egg custard etc. Make a vanilla and crumble up her favorite candy bar for a mix in.

I have a Whynter with a compressor that I got on Amazon for around $250 I think.

Edit: you can buy pint containers on Amazon for cheap. Nice to have because it's a good idea to put the ice cream in the freezer for a day or at least a few hours to help it set up before eating.

I have a Cuisinart ICE-70 that was about 150 and works well. The Ben and Jerry's recipe book is pretty good too.
