At the beginning of the year, Genesis Steakhouse and Wine Bar lost its kosher status. Now, months after its certificate went away, the not-kosher steakhouse is closing.
Genesis, at 80 Braeswood Square in Houston's Meyerland neighborhood, was one of Houston's premier kosher restaurants, serving up steaks, sushi and more. But on Thursday, Genesis announced its upcoming closure via Facebook, to the disappointment of fans across the city.

"We had hoped for a quicker resolution, but at this time, closing our doors is the unfortunate path we must take," reps said.

In addition to praises, commenters also pointed to Goldstein's recent struggles with the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA). The organization revoked Genesis' kosher certification in January 2025, leading to several accusations against the HKA and much controversy.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, Goldstein accused the HKA of "bullying" and having a "personal vendetta" against Genesis. In an interview with Houston Culture Map, Goldstein explained that the certification was revoked after a visit from Rabbi Nosson Dubin, a member of HKA, on Jan. 20.
Goldstein alleged that Dubin asked him to produce an invoice for a package of fish found in the restaurant's freezer. Goldstein explained to Culture Map that Genesis relies on a chef and kosher specialist to maintain the documents and was unable to find them to produce the invoice. The next day, the HKA took away the restaurant's certification.
The loss of the certification, Goldstein said, resulted in the loss of $500,000 worth of private events and catering contracts.

Never been to this restaurant, but this article really peaked my curiosity. Any Houston foodies here familiar with this place, and maybe familiar with this kosher certification stuff?

I’m a non-religious Jew and think the whole concept of “Kosher” is the absolute dumbest part of the religion.
I think the main thing with Kosher beef is the cow needs to be slaughtered in a certain way that is horrible from an animal welfare standpoint because the animal cannot be stunned before being cut. Catering a wedding with Kosher food costs significantly more.
Sounds like the Rabbi responsible for kosher certification did not think the restaurant was doing an adequate job tracking its products and refused to certify.
Anyway, it’s a totally ridiculous concept.

I know that "keeping kosher" can be important to observant Jews, but I was told by a Jewish friend years ago that certification for a fee by rabbinical associations can look a bit like a scam. Obviously, opinions vary, and what does a qoy know about such things anyway?
Out of curiosity I checked the website HKA LINK /
Almost immediately a banner announcing Genesis' loss of status popped up.
That's not a great look for HKA ... quite unprofessional. HKA must have a monopoly in Houston?

Having observed the kosher certification process at several food production facilities I can tell you that a critical step in the certification was the check being ready when the inspection was complete.

Thank you all the the input.
Does the Halal certification have a similar process of inspections and possible payoffs?

I don’t have any experience with the Halal certification.
Also, I want to be clear - it’s not a payoff. The food is kosher, but the certification isn’t given unless the fee is paid.
