How do you keep your charcoal grill going when your coals start to die out?

I don't have this problem mutch, because I don't cook a ton of food very often. I usually just do a steak or two, so I don't need an extended burn with a lot of coals.
I use my chimney starter to get my initial layer going. If I'm cooking a bunch of food, the initial will start to die down. Sometimes, I'll just light another batch with the chimney starter after I pour the first, so I have some ready.
Is this the best option?
Could I just add some new charcoals to the ones already in the pit, and they will slowly burn through?

If using briquettes: use the chimney starter to get the new coals ready and then add them to the pile
If using lump: add directly to the pile. You can use the starter if you'd like, but it isn't necessary.

This is about what I do.

I always just throw them on top

I usually lift up the grill and throw in a few pieces on top of burning charcol. Just make sure you don't use charcol with lighter fluid.

Just add some. No need for a chimney. But don't wait till your first layer of coals is almost dead.

I can't. There is a noticeable taste difference that I just can't give up.
