I have actually never been and have to meet some folks for a dinner in a couple of hours.

Could i get away with nice jeans and a button up dress shirt?

i HATE dressing up. it's really pitiful how rarely i tuck in a shirt.

Of course I guess you could always go in jeans then everyone will whisper and talk about you like I did when people were wearing jeans at Commander's at lunch last week

It means dress like a J.Crew ad.

I went to Palace Cafe for brunch years ago. I was underdressed and felt like a hick; therefore, I drank about a dozen bloody marys to make myself feel better.

Then it really doesn't matter what you wear. Why not put on your dirty coast t-shirt with a ratty blazer, starched jeans and chuck taylors. And a funny hat.

it's a work function that is being put on by a different dept. It will be 5 of us in my dept and about 10-12 of them. It was a nice gesture to include us, but the personalities of 2 depts are VERY different and we barely know them. We will get too drunk, say something we find funny that offends them, and ruin the dinner. They seem like they are extremely sensitive.

We are pretty much carny folk who drift from one project to another without REALLY knowing many of your co-workers.

I hate socializing with colleagues. But it's a nice meal on somebody else's nickel.

so, what did you decide to wear?

Being the jackass I am, I would go out of my way to offend. People either love me or hate me at work, typically women under 40, foreigners and oddball males like me, everyone else finds me obnoxious.

back to the dress question, its always better to over dress than under dress. If you wear jeans, add a blazer and it will make it all ok.
