I've always used a 120 quart pot. I've been looking at 100 qt pots lately and wondering if I can get away with that for a regular boil. 35-40 lbs plus fixings.

Thoughts?

Definitely. You can boil 2 sacks in a 120 with fixings.

I've heard the rule of thumb is:

Multiply your pot capacity in quarts by 60% and that is how many pounds you can cook with extras.

I use an 80 qt pot and put a bag of lemons, container of mushrooms, bag of potatoes, bag of onions, bag of corn, and 1.5 lbs of sausage with no problem while boiling a sack

Not with the baskets many of them sell now, if you use the basket. Apparently some Einsteins loaded a basket to the hilt and just chucked it in and boiled their shins off

My last boil in my 100, I did 42 lbs of crawfish and two large mesh bags of fixings with room to spare.

I did my first boil last Saturday with help from people here. I didnt want to drop $80-100 bucks on a 100 quart pot so I bought a 35 quart aluminum one from academy for $36.

Worked out great. Cooked the potatoes first and then divided all the other stuff up and made about 5-6 batches.

100 should be fine.

do you not normally have a ton of room in tour 120?

i would go smaller too. It takes a long time for a 120 to heat up.

My neighbor has a 60, he can boil a sack but its real tight. Has to do his vegetables/sausage separate.

I went from a 120 to a 100 and will never go back.
I brought the 120 to the camp so I can do 2 sacks at a time there but when at home it's as much about the boiling and drinking as it is the eating. At the camp I usually want to be done so I can go back fishing.

So you are a real person outside of the SEC Rant?
You should have invested in that 100 quart thou. Our pot has been in the family for YEARS!

I've done this before. It was terrible . I like drinking/cooking as much as anybody, but I spent the whole damn night doing it. Last time I trust somebody who says they have all the stuff I'll need to boil.

I was nice and lit by the time I was done though.

Jesus.... how long did all of this take? The point of a crawfish boil is to be able to throw everything in one pot, boil and dump on the table. You turned that shite into fricking marathon.

+1

put a mark in the pot at half the depth of the pot for water fill level. This will keep you from overflow as well as consistency with your recipes, peppered heat, etc.
