Its best to use a Ice Chest with a layer of ice on the top and a layer on the bottom. Make sure to tilt it for the water to run out.
As far as the frig., give Tonys a call, they can give you an answer.

Well here is a question.. Why do you need to put them in a fridge? They dont live in a refrigerator in the wild. We used to always just lay the bag on the groun throw some wet towels over them and boil them the next day.

that's the key. If your put them in too small of an area that is airtight they will die. If you put them in water they will drown...but they need mositure which is why a damp towel is key.

I've kept them in both a large walk-in cooler and covered in a shady outdoor corner overnight with no problems.

That's where they are when you buy them from the seafood places.
It slows them down, so they don't move around and slows the circulation so they need less moisture and air.
The question is how long can they go like that?

That's what I've typically done, but occasionally I've had problems with coons or dogs or cats getting into the bags overnight.

here's a better question - how long do you need to keep them live? most people won't keep them more than a day before cooking them.

we get about 2200 lbs shipped to dc every year. presumably they get caught and bagged on thursday, packed in coolers with wet newspaper and ice packs on friday and shipped, and we pick them up saturday morning of the boil and they are cooked by 5. we have a great survival rate.

Fri to Sun, so we should be okay.

Update, 18 hours in the fridge, and they're still kicking in the sack.

Many years ago, I put some live ones in the fridge. It was in the morning when I stuck them in there. I spent that night at a friend's house since I was too drunk to drive home. I returned to my home at one p.m. the next day. Man, when I unloced the door to my apartment, it smelled like I must of hid fives bodies in there. Now when I get them, I boil them asap. It took over three days to fet that smell of death odor out of that apartment. It took even longer to get the smell out of the fridge.

You fridge must have stopped working because I just took them out after 42 hours in the fridge, and they are all alive and going in the pot in two hours.

I've kept them in a cooler like that for several days. Pour water on them daily, not a lot, just a little splash over the entire upper, outer surface.

Refrigeration is essential- crawfish are cold-blooded.

I would say 2 days at the longests just because the guy you bought them from may have had them for a day.

I think you misunderstand the definition of 'cold-blooded'...
