Frying fish for a baby shower next month and was wondering how many pounds of catfish I'll need.
Around 75 invitations went out and they will mostly be 25-50 year olds there.

1lb per person is what we figure. We ere on the have too much side and it usually works out. So 70lbs.

At a shower with other things to eat
30 lbs would be plenty
30 lbs would be plenty

Yeah, I forgot to mention that there will be other stuff there like normal party food. Finger sandwiches, meatballs, assorted dips and cocktail sausages.

In that case, you’ll have leftovers with 35 lbs.

I fry catfish for 115 people each year. I buy 35 pounds and always have leftovers that we box up for people to take with them.
To be fair, we serve fries, hush puppies, slaw and something like shrimp and grits or shrimp creole with rice along with it.
If the filets are large, I suggest you slice them into 1/2s or 1/3rds. A lot of people will only take a piece or two if there is plenty of other food available.

Half pound per person is plenty. Some folks I know do a third of a pound per person.

Figure this based off a 2-3oz split fish size.
A larger serving would be 6 pieces. So if the average size is 2.5 oz (but it’s split, so divide in half), you can figure 3 pieces at 2.5 oz each. Or, 7.5 ounces per serving.
There are 16 ounces in a pound, so a half pound serving will be ideal.
1/2 pound per person is plenty but if you want to make damn sure, figure 2/3 pound per person. There is no reason to go higher.

Good Lawd!!!! That’s what too much, lmao.

Count on each person on average eating three (4 ounce) fillets. that equals 210 fillets plus a 10 % fudge factor to account for the pigs in the crowd. Then look at fillet size and do the math for 230 fillets. If 4 ounce fillets (What I would do), that would equal 57 pounds. If 6 ounce fillets and 3 per person, figure 86 pounds, which seems high. I don't think many would eat three 6 ounce fillets, so if they took only 2, you would need 52.5 pounds.

Depends. How much do you like cold leftover catfish ? Or do you have an air fryer to re-crisp?

Y'all fat and y'all eat too much.

I'm using the fact that you've clearly never fried catfish for multiple people as a basis for you not knowing wtf you're talking about. Sell people fish plates with 2 4oz fillets, in the south, and see how that goes.

That’s why you use 2-3 ounce SPLIT and give them 6 pieces.
We aren’t dumb enough to serve 4 ounce pieces.
FYI, On average, I coordinate 3,000 fish dinners annually for fundraisers. I’ve been doing it for 15 years.

Was talking to a guy who catered one of our work event recently. He said he'd put a half lb per plate. There was plenty. There were 4 or so strips per.

Wow. That’s over 8 dinners per day. How do you find the time?

It’s only on Fridays during lent, not including Mardi Gras week, so it’s 6 days.

40-50 lbs. is plenty, especially if you have other food items. Figure 2-3 pieces of fried catfish (2-2.5oz sizes) with other food will be your average consumption.

This is the perfect response. Will add there is a big difference between a fish fry where people will eat there and selling fried fish plates. For a fish fry unless the fillets are small (than 2 or 2.5 oz) cut them in half before frying. For 75 people with other food options 35-45 lbs will be more than enough.
