If I was to buy a cow from a rancher, and have it butchered, how much would you estimate the cost would be?

do you live here in Louisiana? ive priced a few farms in the area and can forward you the info.

i hope you have a freezer or friends who will go in with you because you have to buy a half cow or something like that and the farm i spoke with one slaughters every few months.

I bought 1/4 cow from Iowa. Think the cost was $0.80/lb to cut and wrap. Worked out to around $2/lb total.

Check with your butcher, lots of times they will offer 1/2 calf/cow "freezer specials". You buy the 1/2 beast from them & they will cut/grind/etc the meat to your order.

this is where i started my search.

LINK

i get meat from the guy at the farmers market who has goat cheeses. cant recall his name. cooked some beef shank this weekend. have ground beef in the freezer. but i cook for just one usually, so i have no use for that much food.

ill tell you i recall it being pretty expensive for a side of beef, but one day when i have a family, its prob going to be the only way i feed them beef.

Anybody know how much it would cost just to butcher the cow? My BIL has cows, so I might be able to get one pretty cheap.

Not expensive at all if you have a good connection and the space to store. Saves me money in the long run. I cant buy a good steak at 2.49 a lb in a store and the meat tastes better than anything you could get in a store too.

Most definitely. Four of us split a whole cow. Came out to about $500/quarter but each got about 50 lbs ground meat, 6 fillets, 6 ribeyes, some assorted strip steaks, five or six roasts and I ended up with a brisket. Half a cow will fill a decent size chest freezer.

What constitutes a "side of beef"? I remember a school in Baton Rouge used to give one away in a raffle every year.

per lb no, its not expensive.

but i dont have the means to store it and i often cook for just me when its beef since my roommate doesnt do red meat. so its a big purchase when only one person in the household is consuming meat

salmon, if you end up buying the meat from the butcher, i will buy the beef cheek (face) meat off you. i cant find a butcher anywhere in BR to give me these.

I'm sorry, but one of the reasons I want to buy a whole cow is for the hard to find cuts
