Is buying a whole beef tenderloin and trimming yourself worth it?

Basically, do you get more meat for the price?

Absolutely. Sam’s has them for roughly 100-120 right now.
You can make about 8-10 steaks from them, depending on thickness. Plus, there’s a certain satisfaction for me to trim/cut the steaks, idk why, I’m sure it’s a mental thing, but it seems to taste better doing it this way rather than buying them packaged

Yeah and if you get a nice butcher at Sams , he’ll trim and cut into steaks for ya.

yes and you get one of my favorite scooby snacks, the chain.
when you break down a whole tenderloin, the first step is to remove a long "chain" of muscle and fat. It really isn't something worth preparing for others because it is mis-shapen and ugly but I set it aside and cook it when i am done. You can cut little bits of muscle from it with juuust the right amount of fat and season and sear it quickly in butter for a few of the best tasting steak morsels you will ever eat. you will never get that experience unless you break the tenderloin down for yourself because most butchers throw the chain into the grinder.

Yes. I often use some trimmings for “fajitas”

I get the pork tenderloins from sams and use my electric knife to cut them down. Usually get a ton of chops and sometimes save half for a roast. I don’t think my local sams sells beef tenderloins.

You're likely getting pork loins, not pork tenderloins. And yea, your local Sam's carries beef tenderloin. They all do. Catch them when they're on sale, cut them into steaks and vacuum seal. You'll save a good bit of money. Choice fillets are running $22-$30/lb. You can find whole tenderloins for ~$15/lb at times.

I won’t argue with terms lol. Yes pork loins.

I break down chuck rolls into roasts, steaks and stew meat. Surprisingly good steaks in the choice angus chuck rolls from Sams. We use a lot of stew meat for beef tips and beef stew so getting a few ugly steaks that honestly cook up as good as ribeye's is a nice bonus.

Last place I bought one was Dorignacs. The butcher trimmed it (I kept it whole for cooking) and then ground the trimmings for me. I got three very expensive, but quite good, hamburgers out of it.

L-I-O-N!!!!

ETA: I did it once and I enjoyed it. Put the chain in a bowl of Asian noodles and it was delicious. Think I found a tenderloin for $10.99/lb.

Whole beef tenderloin is a great way to go. I get lazy sometimes and buy the 4 packs from Sam's.

Yes and no
I normally but them from Sam's and cut them at home I generally get 10 good size steaks and 1-1/2 fatty or cutoff pieces
For about 110
I bought (4) 3packs of all nice tenderloin for 115 for the same amount of weight and no trim pieces 12 2" thick filets I don't know if I got luck or they always had them cut and I never saw them before
