Not sure if my spelling of the name of the establishment or the original location of the town is correct
(I remember it was near Tylertown or may Columbus MS?) You had to cross over R.R. tracks to get there.
a little "shack sized" place
Anyway
hat bbq with those fat steak fries and bbq sauce.
heaven........sigh
I miss those days

It is now closer to Hattiesburg. Was originally in Foxworth. Columbia is the next town/city which was spitting distance.

Still around, sans Applehead, in west Hattiesburg. Get the sauce on the side. ... it's too sweet for my liking.
If she ever puts the beef "ribs" back on the menu, it's excellent. Really more of a cut of beef with no rib bone.

Leatha died a few years back, the family still runs the place in Hattiesburg. Went to School there in the early 90's when it was still in foxwood, only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We would make a road trip every once in a while, it was great, had your untensils wrapped up in a dish towel ( which came in handy) was not a matching piece of silverware or chairs in the whole place, and had her kids or grand kids serving everybody and one that would come around and sing Michael Jackson songs for a tip

I thought it was pretty pricey for BBQ

I think they have a booth at the WP fair every year

Its decent, but its not like some "bbq gem of the South" that some make it out to be.

RIP, Applehead.
I actually was in Hattiesburg this morning and was all excited to get some Leatha's for lunch.
Imagine my disappointment at realizing that I'd forgotten they're closed on Sunday.

Omg.
I remember Applehead!
He sang "silent night" at our table one time.
I was so embarassed as a kid
I know i would think it was awesome today
rip leatha & applehead

I ate there for the first time yesterday. It is legit and my dinner would rival any BBQ in NOLA area.

I remember the old place...the cooker was a big ol repurposed boiler/tank in a separate small screened building off to the side with rotating tiered racks. Sausage in loops up high, then ribs, then chickens below....which got basted by all of the fat dripping downward from everything else. It was a pretty ingenious setup.
Also have a vivid sense memory of setting foot onto the squishy soft front porch...like stepping onto a floating dock. You kinda wondered if today would be the day it would finally give way beneath your feet....

where are some of you from? I see you mention applehead, and going to school around there. I have lived here my whole life, graduated at west marion, and went to school with several of lethas grandkids. All very good people.. just wondering where some of ya are from

Special place. Crossed over the Pearl River and then back down in a swamp near some railroad tracks. Larry "Applehead" could nail some Michael Jackson. I think it moved to Hattiesburg around 2000 or so.

Washington Parish. Parents use to be friends with Ms. Leatha and her original employer Mr. Nick. Folks ran a resturaunt and sub-contracted them both at different times to do BBQ for catering and service in their own place.

Actually, it is. Best Q from Hattiesburg south through New Orleans, at least

Half of the great smells at the WP Fair is Letha's pit cooking, they make a killing at our fair if I were them I wouldnt work the rest of the year that make that much
