While Chinese cuisine has been 'Mericanized into sweet and sour chicken, and Japanese cuisine has turned into a roll with fake seafood and cream cheese, Korean cuisine is still largely untainted, and absolutely delicious.

Enter Little Korea BBQ, now at their new location on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans.

It was an uphill battle just to get to the venue. First, their A/C failed for a couple of weeks. I decided to try it again on Friday when they reopened for the first time after they fixed their air conditioning issue. I hopped on a St. Charles street car and headed to Uptown. All mass transportation was halted due to a police protest surrounding the Robert E Lee monument. I was forced to leave my street car, snapped this pic, then walked back to my Canal St. hotel.

Saturday, I was determined to try Little Korea, so a friend and I drove there and I'm glad that we did.

Along with the bar area and a counter there were numerous tables set up for table side grilling.

The beer and wine selection is limited...no sake for instance. We ordered a couple of brews and were greeted with the traditional array of Korean small dishes called banchan. Please 'Merica, please please please don't frick with this cuisine. Here is a pic of the spread and also one of my personal plate. It includes various kimchi, shredded fish cake, cucumber, sesame mung beans and tofu. If I was staying at the MGM Grand for instance, these complimentary dishes may have cost $15.

We ended up sharing the chilled, spicy house noodle special, and also the OhSam BulGoGi (spicy pork and squid). The spicy chilled noodles are under the salad in the pic.

I'm going to try the BiBimBap next time. Someone next to our table ordered it and it looked fantastic. Here's a sample pic of the dish...

I can't wait to go back.

Not much better than AYCE Korean bbq. Atlanta has a bunch of amazing places, Texas doesn't seem to have as many.

Heirloom BBQ in Atlanta is amazing. It's owned by some country boy and a former Korean pop star. She was their version of Britney Spears. It's awesome

There is a bar. But I always sit at the tables.

And I was tongue in cheek about the interior design. It is very low budget but awesome in its own way. Their banchan are fantastic.

I would do terrible things for New Orleans to get a legit Sichuan restaurant.

Have you tried the Yellow Menu at Jung's? Jung's can be pretty hit or miss lately, but when they are on, they have some great Chinese dishes. Their ma po tofu is great.

Get thee to the WestBank. Panda King, 925 Behrman Hwy, next door to the Hong Kong supermarket. It has the push-carts, the little paper menus that get stamped each time you try a new offering, and loads of Chinese people. Dim sum on weekends only, 10:30 to 3 pm. Don't bother with going at other times, don't try the buffet.

That pork and squid is legit. I loved this place when it was on Claiborne. Will definitely check the new location. And the ladies that work there are so nice.

Soju is the Korean version of sake order that if they have it. I like it better than sake.
In Korea restaurants are judged by their banchan the good ones were amazing sometimes that was all we ordered.

For anyone that wants to try Korean food but is not familiar with it, here's a link with food descriptions and pics.

They did have soju for $14 but we decided to stick with beer. I asked about any Korean beer and they said no. Any Asian beer at all? No. Imports? Heineken and Blue Moon. I went with a Budweiser. :/

There are a few other dishes on the menu I really want to try so I'll be back, and everything we ate was delicious. The only minor knocks on the place is that the music was way too loud, or at least was during our visit. The waiter and the two of us had to shout and repeat things just to communicate. Also, they provide one of the smallest and weakest paper napkins in the history of all restaurants.
