Not familiar with turnips. Any recommendations on the best way to cook them?

John Pinnette sums up my thoughts on turnips. Just ignore the root part and how good some other roots are.

Peel and cube the turnips into 1"-3/4" rectangular cubes. Dice an onion and start to sweat it in a little oil/butter/bacon fat etc. After it starts to sweat toss in your turnips and stir really well. Season with Slap Ya Mama and put a lid on the pot then turn the heat to medium low and stir every 5-10 minutes. They should render out some moisture and begin to smother. After 30-40 minutes they should be tender. Cook until they're your desired texture and eat them up. Can't go wrong.

1 smoked ham hock
1 yellow onion
1 or 2 fresh garlic cloves
1/2 teaspoon honey or sugar
chicken stock or water
pickled
several turnip roots
a bunch of Turnip greens (or mustard/collard)
pepper vinegar to taste
pickled jalapenos(optional)

rip apart the greens and wash them in the sink

cook the onion and garlic in some bacon grease. Add the Jalapeno now too

add the greens and stock. cook until the pot looks like this

add the turnips to the pot and they cook in 10-15

Are you talking greens or the roots?

If roots, I love roasting them simply in a cast iron skillet (or baking sheet). Peel (I use a knife to cut the outside off just like a pineapple), cube, salt pepper, oil rosemary and thyme if you have the herbs. Turnips are one of my favorite root vegetables.

I love turnips. I made a turnip soup that was good. I think the recipe is in the soup thread.

My favorite is with turnip greens similar to the recipe above. I remember seeing a turnip gratin recipe, but I didn't make it. Sounded great, though. I also roast them.

They are a must in my veg beef soup. I use them instead of potatoes.

Dozen or so turnips diced into 1/4s. Some water and chicken stock to cover. Pickled meat salt, pepper, Tony's to taste.

Cover and cook to your desired consistency

Turnips are fantastic. Made a black eyed pea/turnip green/turnip soup with smoked ham hocks last week. Ate it 3 straight days. Making a turnip gratin to go with a rib roast for Easter Sunday. I believe it is an Otis2 recipe and likely in the recipe book. I tweak it with some slice button mushrooms.

That's just regular greens with the roots added at the end

Did this tonight. Great ideas. I'll try the others next week
