I've eaten at Luke several times over the years. It's not a "top ten" restaurant by any stretch, but it's perfectly fine. Great for lunch and the happy hour oysters.

Agreed. I've always fashioned it as a pretty casual place to get some killer cocktails and really good food for brunch/lunch. Not fine dining, and might not blow you away, but it's still proper food and speaking for myself, it's a frick ton better than pretty much every place in the shtick. If NOLA ever decides they no longer need or desire it, I'll take it.

I'm going there for the charcuterie and oysters

You're right, maybe everything else is meh, but my first course at Luke is always spot on

My thoughts exactly. Great oyster selection. Good bucket of mussels. Good pate. Good gumbo. Good burger.

Come on...Don't start that nonsense. Yes, it would be the best german/creole inspired restaurant in BR. I'm not even going to offer a retort if you are being serioius.

Name the place you think compares. Not in food genre perhaps, but in quality of food created. There are a few, and that's why I wasn't absolute, but most places here can't hold a candle to Luke and anyone who's been and is remotely honest will admit to that.

I lied saying I wouldn't respond, but just to prove a point.

BR has classic italian as good as anywhere in NOLA I've been.
BR has indian better than anywhere in NOLA I've been.
BR has Thai as good as anywhere in NOLA I've been.

Just to name a few different cuisines.
BR has several places that are putting out better food top to bottom than Luke. I like Luke, but it wouldn't be in my top 5 in BR either.

Just because it's different than anything we have doesn't make it the best.

I have a feeling we're going to agree to disagree here.

I guess the classic thing threw me. I don't see a place in either city that truly offers classic Italian cuisine. Classic American Italian perhaps, but not truly classic Italian. All play upon some pretty over played generalizations that isn't what you find in Italy as if Italy was just one kind of cooking, one cuisine, or one region. There is an enormous amount of Italian cuisine that gets NO play here or most everywhere in the states.

Do they have to?

I mean, is there a huge population of Indians and Thai so that it would warrant such ethnic foods in a place known for French Creole cooking? It's New Orleans, and they have their own food identity. We don't. That's just reality. It seems pretty normal to expect New Orleans food to be a staple in New Orleans.

Honestly though LSUAfro. I can understand NOLA not having great Indian or Thai more than I can understand a place an hour down the road from New Orleans not having a really authentic New Orleans Poboy, or an hour from Laffy and not having a really authentic and awesome Cajun food to speak of. In as much as we have Indian and Thai, wouldn't it make more sense that we have truly great Cajun and Creole instead?

The list?

Probably, but doesn't mean we can't debate it intelligently.

I have been to Luke 4 different times for lunch within the past 6 months and have yet to have a bad experience. Is it the greatest meal I've ever had? No. But it's a pretty great lunch option and I always leave there pretty satisfied.

Yea I dont get the undue hatred for Luke on this board. Excellent happy hour and some very good, unique dishes
