Old HS classmate is visiting NO from the West Coast. She has accompanied her husband on many trips to NO, so has seen all the local sites and eaten at all the NO restaurants.

Need ideas on what to take her to see on a day trip.

Was thinking of driving her over to Waveland/Bay St Louis to see the damage/recovery of Katrina. She really enjoyed me taking her through the 9th Ward and St Bernard Parish on a previous trip.

My local cafe/restaurant favorites in the BSL area were Lil Ray's and Mary's.....but both are closed now (I think) after Katrina.

Any good spots for a week-day lunch in the BSL area?

Pirate's Cove in Pass Christian has my favorite roast beef po-boys. Serves all the local seafood po-boys too. Simple google search will get you directions.

The best spot over here is The Sycamore House, upscale dining. LINK Looks like it's only open lunch thursday-sun.

The Mockingbird is our hip little coffee shop that serves cafe food. LINK

The West End is in Waveland and their menu is from shrimp and grits to hamburgers and steaks.

Trapani's Eatery is off 90 and it's the best place for trout or flounder. They serve them topped or stuffed, paneed or fried.

Emma's, Jack's and Benigno's are in the train depot district of BSL, and they're good.

That should cover you. Not sure what you're really after as far as Katrina damage goes. A block or two off of the beach in Waveland has empty lots galore, but no real trash piles or destroyed stuff. All the houses are new...BSL just has empty lots on Beach Blvd, and a couple of abandoned looking buildings. The old town part south of 90 looks pretty much the same. North of 90 is either lots or new construction. Not too much to gawk at anymore.

I can show y'all the water line in my house if you must see some destruction.

I hope you enjoy the area. You can get out and walk old town BSL, if nothing else just to break up the drive. The pier at the end of Dunbar is cool too, overlooks the mouth of the Jourdan River. If you want a long-arse walk you can tread up to the top of the BSL-Pass bridge. It's a real nice walkway.

Our, BSL, beach is closed. They are building a sea wall and they have it closed from the bridge to the RR bridge. Kind of sucks. Waveland actually still has some BP cleanup going on, you'll see them with kitty litter scoops on broom handles.

If y'all get coffee at the Mockingbird on 2nd, you can walk or drive south and cross the tracks. There is an old oak tree with a deck around it. It's a cool spot.

Thanks,

My wife's grandparent's lived in Waveland before they passed away. They had an old Jim Walter's home 6 blocks north of the RR tracks. It was my wife and my getaway week-end house after they passed.

Some great memories.
