What about Panera? I think they’re actually growing their footprint across the country.

Yikes!! I've had Hospital food that wasn't as bland!

Paul, As the only poor (less than $200,000 a year income) person on TD, I find Panera to be expensive for what you get. Fast food price probably doesn't bother most here.
Taste of Panera is fine, better than McAllister's. There is one in South Memphis we stop at, thinking it is a safe location to grab some food. Have been to the one on Lakeland Drive in Jackson for the same reason. Never been to the one in Madison, because there are many other safe places there.
If you think I am saying location safety is the main thing that draws me to Panera, you are correct.

I've never cared for Panera either. It's not the exact same type of food but if I want something relatively healthy I'll go to Zoe's.

they used to have a delicious grilled chicken club, where an actual chicken breast was used.
today, it's "shaved" chicken. it sucks. i don't go anymore.

If you are a salad person.. this is probably one of the best places. Lettuce is always fresh and you get what you pay for. Its a big bowl.
Sandwiches/Pizza are pretty good too. Also can't say that I have ever had any bad service/food and I have been at the busiest times.

Newk’s was founded in 2004 by Don Newcomb, Debra Bryson and Chris Newcomb, the team that founded McAlister’s Deli.

That hot Italian sandwich they have is pretty good; half that and whatever soup looks good that day is alright.
I don't know if Atlanta Bread Company is gone everywhere, but i thought they were better than Panera or McAllister's.

McAllisters, Newks, and Sweet Peppers are all modeled off of Bulldog Deli in Starkville that was started and owned by Robin Fant.
It's a little known fact, but Fant had a hand in forming McAlister's. While Don Newcomb is most often associated with having founded the company, he and Fant were business partners.
Fant says he was looking to grow beyond his single Bulldog Deli franchise and looked at Oxford. He found a place called Checkers, formed a partnership with Newcomb, a dentist, and reopened it as McAlister's. The menu and atmosphere were modeled after the Bulldog Deli.
They opened a second McAlister's in Hattiesburg, which was fine with Fant. But the partners didn't agree on the direction of the company.
Fant said he "basically walked away from the partnership" in the fall of 1992. There was no animosity in the split - just a difference in how the company should grow.

I really enjoyed McAlister's Muffaletta but it's not on the menu in Auburn any more. Not a great muffaletta compared to what you can get in the wide world but was my only option in Auburn.
Each one has menu items I enjoy. Can't really say I prefer one over the other. If I had to choose I might way Newks.

The newcombs haven't been apart of mcalisters in about 20 years. I worked in management for corporate in 2003-2004 and they definitely weren't involved then. I believe Chris, Don's son, actually helped start Moe's Southwest Grill.
Newks original plan when they started opening was to basically put one very close to all existing McAlisters to steal the business.

Don't think I've ever eaten at Newks, so now my interest is piqued. Have only had McAllister's for company lunches that were catered. Doubt I've ever set foot in one before. There's one not too far from me. Getting tired of the at home lunch routine during this pandemic and this thread has me wanting to actually go try it now. Wouldn't know the first thing worth ordering though.

No more McAllister’s by me anymore but I did like their baked potatoes, potato soup and sweet tea
News’s is ok but I haven’t been in years
Jason’s Deli sucks - there hasn’t been one time Ive gone there where I didn’t get the shits
If I want to spend $20 and still be hungry and unsatisfied I’ll go to Panera - although they do give refills for their iced coffee which is nice (but so does IHOP

Newk’s is my favorite of those 3 now. I used to like Jason’s Deli but pretty much only for the salad bar which they obviously haven’t had in awhile. McAllister’s is the worst of the three but not terrible.

Newks is great and Gonzales desperately needs one

Newk's for salads, McAllister's for sandwiches.
I get the shrimp and avocado salad from Newk's a couple of times a month.
