New gaskets don't work anymore and I think the hinge is bent or just worn out. It's going on 12 years of heavy use, 4 a-5 nights a week sometimes more. Won't stay under 325 ever.
Can you buy the lid, hinge and main unit separately? Or should I just get a new one or Kamado even?

Advise,

Ok, I'm going to contact BGE. BTW gaskets are not an easy fix at all. I've replaced gasket at least a dozen times last one was the super gasket at $99, no fix and I've watch you tube videos over and over and did all the techie fixes it still is not adjusted and has a severe over bite on the lid. Over the last twelve years I've replaced about $150 worth of parts not including grills. I love the grill but man I need a new one or a fix.

This is user error. I have changed mine out before without any issues. Fixing the overbite can be a pain, but it can be done.

It honestly just sounds like you don’t want to do it yourself. I get it, but the alternative a few hundred more bucks on a new grill.

If you’re having issues repairing the grill yourself, call your local distributor and tell them you need an adjustment, new hinge, etc. I bet they’ll be happy to install replacement parts for a nominal cost, or just adjust the hinge if you’ve got a misalignment,

It’s far from worn out. If you want to give it away, you’ll find plenty of takers who can do the simple repairs needed.

A new updated hinge assembly is gonna run you $130 and it makes a huge difference. My old hinge was all jacked up and replacing it was easy to do and now it works great. Gaskets need to be changed as needed. Mine always wear out at the back edge of the 2 ‘halves’.

I’ve got the same issue with the overbite on an xl that causes the gasket to burn up. Doesn’t help that we do pizzas a couple of nights a week on it. Probably time to bite the bullet and get new hardware since it’s one of the original XLs from the early 2000s

4-5 times a week? Jebus. Between the cost of charcoal and the cost of meat, how much you spending on food and food grilling every week?

I replaced the gasket on my primo with some sort of fibrous gasket that I can’t remember what it is at the moment. Glued down with some high temp rtv and it’s not showing any signs of burning out. So I’m sure you can replace the gasket and like others said adjust or replace the hinge. If you still want a KJ and your local to lafy or close I’m ordering a few later today that will be Baw discounted. Nolagt3 at gmail. I think you can fix yours up tho.

I recently replaced hinge assembly on my 8 year old BGE. The new model assembly with the larger handle is much nicer and will fit the old model eggs. Also, a Rutland gasket glued down with permatex works well.

Cotronics 397 Is the stuff I used with the orang ultra high temp rtv. It will say not to use around food but it seems to be ok at the temps it’s exposed to as a gasket. I haven’t grown a 3rd arm or died yet and it’s been about 5years. Primo only had one on the bottom part but I added a second on the lid too.

Tip: put the rtv on thick and lightly lay the gasket on it. Put a piece of cardboard or something in between the lid in the base and close it to push it further into the RTV. That way you have a nice flat gasket that seals well. When I did mine I pushed it down onto the surface of the primo first and it had some waviness to it, so there are gaps in mine now when the kid is closed. Not too big of a deal for me to redo it though.

it is simple. and dont buy the commercial seals. go to the forum and this guy sells seals that are of better quality than the felt. I think he used the fire retardant cloth they use in fireman suits. i have been planning on ordering one for my primo just havent gotten around to it.

Nomex is what is typically used.

Thanks for the advice, good ideas here, I have changed the gasket several times with good success but the last time it didn't help much. I'm going with a new hinge.

As far as cost of charcoal? the thing I like about the BGE is it doesn't use much, just a handful does it added to the old stuff. 25 LB bag will last a month or more.

All ceramic type of grills will sip fuel. I can get over 24hrs on my primo at 225-250 with a fresh loaf of lump. That is one thing I really like about them.

Mine is about 12 years old, too. Gasket was gone and the hinges were warped with one of them finally popping.

Went to my local place that sells them and bought a new set of hinges, handles...basically all the metal connected to the hing and handle. Cost about $130.

Paid the guy that assembles them $80 to switch it out and put a new gasket on. I probably could have done it myself but would have taken a lot longer and multiple attempts to get it straight. This guy knocked it out in about an hour. Works like brand new now.

I also replaced the metal piece that separates the charcoal from the bottom. Mine was cracked and warped horribly. Replaced it with the Kick Ash basket. Seems to better air flow.
