At that price point, look to South America.

Exactly and if it’s dry (dries your mouth when you drink) that is the effect of tannins. Cabernet will have tannins.

You can find this at Total Wine for right around $30. You have to spend like double to get much better IMO.

Intrinsic is a Washington Cabernet. Sold a lot of it. Very approachable, probably $20 at the store. 14 hands Cabernet is a great value. Does very well in blind tasting, it’s affordable because they make 900000 cases a year. I usually steer away from celebrity wine but the Zach Brown uncaged is a great value as well. If you are new to Cabernet , give the Washington wines a shot. More affordable and the climate lends to a softer taste.

My MIL is a wine snob and she keeps plenty of Josh cab on hand, it's less than $20/bottle. I can't usually tell the difference between a good or bad one, but she can, and she likes Josh.

The best Josh IMO is the Red Blend. That same wine maker has a really good Cab called Joseph Carr (his name) which is around the $30 range, probably a little higher.

My favs around that price range:
Frei Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma)
J Winery Pinot Noir (Sonoma)
Erik Texier Chat Fou (France)
Austin by Austin Hope (Paso Robles)

$50+ range is noticeably better:
Prisoner Red Blend (Napa)
Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)
Duckhorn (Napa, Alexander)
Many Italians; Barolo, Super Tuscan

I drink a good bit of Spanish wines in the $10-$20 range and really enjoy them (Garnacha, Rioja, Temperanillo, Syrah, Mourverde). I buy almost all my wine from Costco or Aquistapaces and rarely do I feel the need to stretch above $20 for an enjoyable bottle of wine.

Can Blau is $15
Monte Oton $10

On the subject of Spain, Ribera del Duero is a region that most California red drinkers tend to enjoy. The grape is Tempranillo (also found in Rioja). I call it the gateway wine to Euorpean styles since it is very approachable, dark and bold. They are usually in the $15-25 range for a quality bottle. For those people saying Bonanza, Juggernaut, Josh, etc.... you may find these wines to be quite the step up for similar price, though they won't be Cabernet Sauvignon. Just an interested sidestep if you're changing it up one night.

My new go to house is Banshee Cab 2021.

I would not call it dry, but it is an excellent wine for 22 bucks, buy the six pack at Albertsons and you get 10% off.

Out standing. Had it and a bottle of Peju Cab the same night, and while the Peju was just better, at almost three times the price it wasnt that much better

Keep an eye out for Clay Shannon, Shannon Ridge, Substance CS and Joel Gott if you’re looking for domestic wines. They are great to drink on their own or pair with food and should all be under 20ish. If you’re new to wine, old world European wines may come off a little funky and can be hard to drink on their own. Most Old world wines are really meant to be paired with food. The wine world is vast, try everything.

Really enjoyed Cline Cashmere this week. It’s a blend with Cabernet S. being the primary component.

I lie… it has no cab, its primary grape is Mourvèdre, whatever that is. Anyway <$15.

Tastes like a big cab.

Mourvedre is the "M" in "GSM blend."
Common term for a southern Rhone style wine, and most of those are comprised of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.

Side note, if you've ever had a Monastrell from Spain, then you've had Mourvedre in a different language!
