Frozen tater tots make the best homemade hash browns. Period.

Sauté some jalapeños and onion in bacon grease.
Add frozen tater tots.

As they thaw, break them apart with a wooden spatula until it’s just shredded potatoes.

Serve with good ketchup and hot sauce.

You won’t do hash browns any other way, except to use different toppings.

Throw defrosted Tator Tots on a waffle iron and mash down. (The cheap ones that look like a small George Foreman grill)

They make a damn good hash browns.

Here is the poop.

Hash Browns is hash browns.

Tater Tots is Tater Tots.

Never were intended to be the same.

I love both, but there will always be that special place in my heart for Tater Tots.

By the way, I think the photo you show is a Tater Cake. Per the above, it is not hash browns or Tater Tots and should not be confused with either.

I'm not sure what the taters cubes are, As you said, they are not really hash browns, and those of us in the Tater Tots camp don't want them either.

By the way, IMO, the Ore Ida crinkle cut French fry is the GOAT French Fry.

Thanks for allowing me to voice my opinion. I do not expect others to agree, because this is a very personal matter to most folks.

Oh, by the way, not all tots are created equal and some are not worthy.

Friend of mine at at Stab’s Friday night and told me his homemade tater tots were frozen in the middle.

Yeah I’ll pass. My wife can do that at home.

Top pic is what I call Hash Browns. I make them at home from fresh potatoes shredded and soaked in cold water for several minutes, then drained and patted dry as I can get them prior to placing in my frying pan to season and brown.

Once in the pan, I don't mix them at all, just spread them out evenly to brown on one side before flipping them to finish cooking.

They are a big hit on the weekends when my wife is off work and we have breakfast together.

I love hash browns any way, too. But my favorite potato preparation is Crash Hot Potatoes (in the recipe collection).

I'm with you on the potatoes. When I order hash browns and I get those potatoes I'm always mad about it. Just called them diced potatoes. However, the patty IS a hash brown.
