only use peanut, but i only fry stuff a couple times a year so cost isn't a big concern.

Used to use cottonseed oil when we could get it.
Canola is cheaper and tastes better than peanut, IMHO. I don't fry anything hotter than like 375F-400F, so it works fine.

Louana makes a deep frying blend of peanut and soybean oil called Southern Frying Oil - its cheaper than peanut and works pretty good.
I usually get cotton seed at Academy and I love it, but last time I needed some I was at Winn Dixie, so I tried the Southern Frying Oil and it seemed to have the same qualities.

I don't mind using a little bacon grease for a roux now and then; I just can't use straight up lard. You lose your "crunch" too quick.

Peanut oil is a standard...but if you are not worried about health...I was in the kitchen one day with Carlos(Carlo's Mexican Restaurant) and he was frying his chips...not in cottonseed oil...not in peanut oil...but...drum roll please....Coconut oil...used it for all his fried foods...and ask anyone(old enough to remember)...he had great food....Just a little tip from Carlos to me to you

growing up we almost exclusively peanut oil; my parents would buy the big jug (3 gallons, i think).
these days i use mostly canola oil but occasionally i'll buy peanut; i think peanut has a better flavor but is expensive.

If I'm cooking bacon, I purposely find something to fry just to use it.
