Bourbon
Angostura bitters
Muddled sugar cube
Splash of water
Maraschino cherry
ETA: muddle the cube in the splash of water BEFORE adding alcohol. Won't dissolve in alcohol.

Keep it simple. Use quality ingredients, and go with the actual sugar cube and not simple syrup.
Also the garnish (oils) ARE important.

Make your own simple syrup. 1 cup sugar/ 1 cup water, boil till clear.
2 oz bourbon, minimum would be something like buffalo trace or eagle rare. Teaspoon of simple syrup, couple slashed of bitters, pour into a glass with a couple of pices of ice, the bigger the better. No muddling, cut a piece of orange with rind into a strip. Rub on the inside of the glass and drop onto the glass
