I love oysters but I hate food poisoning.

What do you native born Gulf Coasters think?

Fact. Oysters, if harvested in the summer, have a greater chance of disease in hot weather. I would not eat Gulf oysters in June, July and August. May is iffy if the hear has come early. Other regions, no comment.

I've always eaten them year round and never had any issues. I think it was more an issue in the old days before refigeration.

Fact and fiction. Safe to eat yes. Gulf oysters spawn in the summer so they are milky and chalky. Vibrio has been curtailed by the requirements on Refridgeration of oysters being harvested.

I stick with char-grilled in the summer

They seem smaller and less full during the summer.

Once the water over the harvesting beds gets above 85*, I’m out for raw oysters.

Agree, however water temps won't drop until lat Oct. I usually eat them from Nov-April.

This is why carrying Ivermectin is imperative if eating oysters during summer meals.
