Pigeon & Whale - New Restaurant - Freret St, NOLA

Brand new restaurant on Freret, open less than two weeks. I honestly hadn’t even heard about its opening but my wife randomly saw it on Resy and looked at the menu and wanted to go.
Made a reservation and it’s fairly obvious when I got there that I am very out of the loop because it was PACKED. Definitely the new hotness apparently.
They did an absolutely great job with the interior. Very pretty restaurant that they obviously spent a ton of money on the buildout. Kinda of modern “sea” theme with a lot of retro touches. However, it is an extremely loud place. They need to figure that out.
Bar is beautiful with a pretty sharp cocktail list and small but nice wine list. Had two Negronis that were very on point.
The food was fantastic for a place only open 10 days. I have no idea who the chef is or the people behind it but they served some really excellent food. Mostly seafood based with some really high end presented dishes. I thought the prices were relatively reasonable too. My only quibble would be the squid ink pasta could have used a tiny bit of salt and heat, maybe red pepper.
Service was really nice and smart, but slightly on the slow part as you’d expect from a new place. But our server was still very good.
If you’re looking for a cool new spot to take the Mrs. I recommend.

I had to look it up to see where this was, and it’s where I suspected.
That seems to be a tough space for places, for some reason. I’ll still try to check it out.

I literally walked passed it the other day and said "When did that get there" . Apparently I'm out of the loop as well. Will have to give it a try. Thanks for the review.

This place may stick around. The build out was very well done, food was great, and it was super crowded. We will see if it can sustain it but I don’t think the word of mouth is even out there yet.

Yeah and there’s that.

Interesting menu. What's Sh!t in the Shell?
There's chargrilled mussels, but no chargrilled oysters. With all of the oyster offerings, I'm surprised by that.
No crab except for crab fat on the scallops and just a few shrimp dishes.
What else did you and the Mrs. have?

Virtually every table got this but us. They looked really good and smelled great.

What bizarre observations. What’s the significance of this observation?

Huh. Interesting. This was certainly nothing like the other two places. Definitely more upscale-ish.

This place is has been on radar. We are going to Cure in a couple weeks and will prob make a reservation then. Menu looks awesome.

Remember when this place had frequent, quality reviews of restaurants. Good info bunchmigo

Menu and pictures look like they’re trying to recreate 167 Raw (from Charleston)

Lots of seafood on the menu. Guess I expected to see those as well. Crab is my favorite, so I looked for it.

We got raw oysters, ceviche, octopus, squid ink pasta, and teramasalata (which was really great). And dessert.
Pretty sure I just read your wife's detailed review with some great photos.

Menu looks terrible for a restaurant on Ferret St. Won’t last six months at that particular location.
