My god am I shocked to see someone asking about lil ole Murphy. The reach of TD is unreal. I live in Bryson City, about 40 minutes from Murphy and am there often.

Shoe Booties and Parson’s Pub are located downtown and I would recommend them both. Parson’s is more of a traditional pub with shepperd’s pie and such available. Shoe Booties is a great steak/pasta place with excellent service and more of an “upscale” sort of vibe. Great option for lunch or dinner. Perrone’s is probably my favorite of the restaurants around downtown, but expect to wait 30-45 minutes for a table.

Chevelle’s is a great option for a burger and fries sort of place that has live music at night. Valley River Brewery around the corner is another good option that serves fantastic pizza.

Avoid Legends Steak House and Chophouse. Both are garbage and horribly overpriced.

The premier restaurant/bar in the area is The Crown in tiny Brasstown about five minutes from downtown Murphy. It’s surrounded by beautiful mountains and everything served there is sourced locally. You can order everything from quail to trout along with excellent steak options. Hands down the best old fashioned in WNC if you’re into that.

As far as things to do, what are your interests and fitness level?

Thanks TOTM, great info on the eats. We will be there for 10 days, mostly to get away and relax. We do have plans to take a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain train but other than that, mostly enjoy the mountains, waterfalls, etc.

Drive down to Blue Ridge, Georgia. It’s about a half hour away. My wife and I just spent a week there. Check out The Ledger. Highly recommend! Their ribeye and shrimp and grits were both delicious.

You’ll enjoy that. There are quite a few different hikes in the area worth going on if that’s your thing. The Riverwalk across from the post office in Murphy is a nice and easy walk that follows the Hiawassee River that takes you to an old railroad and has many different historical markers worth reading along the way. Panther Top is a little bit more difficult of a hike, but the trail will take you to an old fire tower and some impressive views.

Fires Creek in nearby Clay County is another good option to view the leaves and take some easy hikes around the creek. There’s also a waterfall across from the parking area. If you’re lucky, you may get to see some extremely rare river otters as well. If you’re up for a little adventure, follow the gravel road in Fires Creek until it ends. I don’t remember the exact mileage, but you’ll be deep in the Nantahala NF and there’s another waterfall worth viewing once you reach the end of the road. It’s at least 15 miles or so until the end. That’s a bit of a local secret so don’t tell anyone if you find it

“The Dam” as we call it is a TVA dam built on Lake Chatuge in Clay County that offers fantastic views of the lake and mountains with super easy, paved walking trails.

Appalachian Driving Experience is a unique way to view the mountains and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. If you’re coming from LA, you’ll appreciate the curved roads in one of their cars.

Are you going to be here this weekend? The Punkin Chunkin festival is happening in Brasstown starting Friday and that’s worth checking out if you’re here. The machines and trebuchets people build to launch pumpkins is surprisingly impressive

I’ll be in BR over the weekend, but will be back to the area on Sunday if you need anything or find yourself lost or something I’ll check this thread periodically.

Also, what area did you rent a cabin in? I own property in the Martins Creek area of Murphy and off Setawig Road in Brasstown.

Again, thanks
We have vacationed in the general area of Murphy, Tellico Plains, Blueridge, etc but it’s always best to here what the locals recommend.
Are there any river tours (cruise the river in a party barge) in the area?
The cabin is on Die Bend Road.

No, but you can rent kayaks if you don’t mind the cold. There’s a boat landing across from the fire station that’s a good place to put in and do some exploring on your own or schedule a guided tour.

That’s in the ranger area and closer to the TN line. Are you a Freemason by chance? There’s a lodge not far from where you’re staying if you’re interested in checking out how we do things in NC.

Thanks for this info. We were in Mineral Bluff this weekend. Ellijay and Blue Ridge are getting a little too busy for us and a waitress mentioned Murphy, NC. That will be our destination next year for sure.

Valley River is usually my go to out there when I am out there for Hiwassee group work. I don’t find the chophouse to be garbage though, it’s fine. Perrones is great. I hit up Monte Alban for cheap beer night frequently, not terrible Mexican. Rib Country isn’t too bad either for BBQ. Comfort Grub is a pretty good meat and 3 for lunch.

I avoid the casino like the plague, it’s depressing as frick and restaurants are subpar, but usually stay at the hotel when I do overnights because I get free nights off the government.

The secret seems to be out about Murphy unfortunately. When I moved here permanently about a decade ago, you rarely saw more than a few cars stopped at a light. Now I feel like I’m stuck on I10 during a hurricane evacuation.

Still much better than Elijay and Blue Ridge, but it’s trending that way sadly.

Monte Alban is decent for what it is. I haven’t eaten at Rib Country in a long time, but they’re always packed.

Come on man! My wife and kids are EBCI. Help me get that per cap up

I do agree that it is a little depressing and the restaurant there is not good. The property in Cherokee is excellent, however.

All of WNC is getting that way. Hipsters are invading everywhere out there. Hayesville even went from country as frick to getting invaded by hipsters.

I blame the new age guitar playing and flannel wearing non denominational types for that

Yes, and I may just do that. When do they meet? We will be in MNC from 10/15 - 10/25.

One more question, does anyone have a set around and have a guitar jam on Friday or Saturday night?

I’m not sure when they meet. I’ll try to find out. It’s the Montgomery Lodge #426 A.F &A.M.

Not sure about this either sorry. The Mason Bar downtown has a live band those nights I believe and they may let you jam with them.

Maybe reach out to the lodge secretary to see if you can get a tour or something. I’ve been to that lodge many times and I must say, it’s not overly impressive

Although it’s a one level lodge which is pretty rare.

Does anyone in Murphy do a good Sat/Sun brunch?

Or in the general area...Blueridge, etc.
