Poor Boys Riverside Inn Review

I've recommended this restaurant many times. Finally got back there recently.
I've always loved the old atmosphere there and the views from all the windows. Once you walk in and see those views, you feel like you're somewhere else.
Service was a bit off. We had a waiter who informed us he'd only been there 4 days and it was apparent that he had not been trained well. He was very nice, but there were lag times in course deliveries that were obviously kitchen issues, but he just didn't seem to want to remove course plates from the table until he brought other food, though we asked him to do so. Ours was his only table. It was odd.
I only took one picture and got a few from a friend who took some others.
We started with a platter of fried crab claws with 3 sauces of tartar, white remoulade and cocktail. The claws were full and meaty and golden brown. Excellent.
I had a cup of seafood gumbo which was very good. It had a lot of shrimp and jumbo lump crabmeat, especially for a cup rather than a bowl.
Two people got the charbroiled oysters knowing they probably wouldn't be very large. They were very small as expected, overcooked and had very little sauce. My gumbo was brought immediately, but the oyster app took about 30 minutes to arrive. The waiter kept telling us they were in the oven. They were in the oven too long. The other serving of oysters looked much worse than those in the picture.
Two of us had the crabmeat au gratin. It was not as I remembered it. The sauce was heavy and barely okay. It was obviously overcooked and had very little crabmeat. The sauce had started to separate and was a bit greasy rather than creamy. We both had a lot of sauce left having fished out the crabmeat we could find. The stuffed potato appeared to have been in an oven for several days. Hard as a rock inside and out. If I'd have thrown it through a window, it would have gone through and traveled far.
The picture below is from the website and is as I remembered the dish.
One person got the seafood platter. Everything on it was way overcooked. The crab claws look nothing like the ones we had as an appetizer. The stuffed crab was so overcooked, the whole thing came out of the foil shell when the person tried to get a bite. The picture doesn't show how dark the food actually was. Dry and dark. It came with a cup of gumbo which could have been brought earlier. The waiter forgot about that completely. When it arrived after reminding him, it was nothing like mine. Had a few shrimp and a lump of crab.
The other person had the sauteed crab. This was the winner dish. The crabmeat was beautiful with good flavor. The serving was generous.
The meal was a mixed bag. Sadly, it did not inspire a return visit with anyone. Maybe it was a bad day. All the other meals I've had there have been so good.

That's disappointing. I was telling my wife the other day that we need to go there soon as we haven't been in probably 5+ years. I feel like eventually location will kill them and their regulars will start to die off and that'll be that for another Lafayette staple. Definitely some nostalgia there for me, my grandparents took us there every time they came to town, we'd go for my parents birthday, Mother's Day, etc. Riverside's crabcakes are my favorite I've ever had.

We haven’t been since COVID. We tried to on two occasions, but both times the wait was well more than a hour. They were only using half the dining room due to lack of servers. The fact that your server had been there less than a week is an indication that they are still having issues.
Their menu is seafood heavy, and in my opinion it takes a well trained cook to prepare good seafood properly. It overlooks fast. There’s not a lot of room for error.
I hope they can overcome this and get some good reliable staff, but much like the old defunct pizza place in BR, you have to pay good help well if you want good help.
Last time we were there, we waited a short while before we gave up. They had a couple coons in the parking lot begging for handouts.

We saw a family of 4 raccoons trotting across the parking lot toward the water as we were leaving.

When I was a kid my dad once told me those racoons would wait in the parking lot to attack people who had leftovers. I was always relieved when we left without leftovers but still wanted to walk to the car quickly, just incase.

was that the oyster dish BEFORE being eaten ?
if so, I would have asked for Richard or Lori (owners) and complained. Totally unacceptable including the au gratin that was definitely burned cheese and overcooked.
I too would have been disappointed as that's horrible on their part

Yes, that was before it was eaten.
I was astonished that the potato was served at all. I can’t remember a potato that was even rock hard on the inside.
I never saw an owner while we were there.

Was once my favorite restaurant in the Lafayette area. Went a few months back and it was average at best.

How disappointing. Damn, they should be ashamed for letting those plates go out!
It has been hit or miss for us over the last few years. At today’s prices for dining out it’s hard to give a place many more chances, even old favorites.

It makes me sad to hear that others have had some not so great experiences as well. Two of us had been there before a number of times and we were excited about going back and bringing two people who had never been. I built it up a good bit and the photos online make the food look great like it used to be, so everyone was looking forward to it.

Agreed. Those plates represent a total failure in the kitchen and management.

I messaged them on Facebook after reading some recent reviews on their page which were not complimentary.
Someone isn't doing the job of watching what's going on in the kitchen with cooking or timing. They aren't training the new guy. I think he was in the "trial by fire" stage.
He brought the fried claws out with no sauce at all. When I asked, he then said he could go get the sauce that goes with it and which one would we want? Then, we had to wait a good while for him to bring the sauces. I forgot that part.
We all had water and the glasses had no ice and there was apparently very little ice in the pitcher he was using, so the water was not very cold. I asked him for a glass of ice. I was going to poor my warmed water into that glass. He came back and filled my glass with more water. I said I'd asked for a glass of ice. He said he knew that, but he figured he'd just fill my glass. I told him I wanted the ice and after some period of time possibly necessary to freeze some ice cubes, he returned. One blunder after another.

I don’t think I ever complained to a restaurant manager/owner after a meal, but that experience looks atrocious and would’ve prompted me to speak to someone. Of course, I would never step foot in there again.
I’ve never been, but it seems like Riverside Inn has seen its last days. The 25 min trip to Dupuy’s would’ve been worth the drive.

The sautéed crab looks delicious.
Everything else….not so much.

Don's on Johnston has been awesome. The wait on a Saturday night was long, but reservations are accepted.

Yuuup, Don’s has been crushing it lately. Smartest menu offering they did several years ago was the charbroiled oysters. IMO Don’s > Dragos

Don's was on my radar, but per the website, it didn't appear they were serving the oysters at lunch and my Mom wanted those and crabmeat au gratin which isn't on the menu.
I got a nice response from Lori Hurst. As predicted by some, they are short staffed and don't have enough staff to shadow the new guy who is not learning as fast as he should. IMO, it's difficult to train people when you don't have staff to do it. These days many places are having to deal with staffing issues and that's difficult.
She suggested that the overcooking issue might be that the waiter didn't pick up the food under the warming lamp timely enough. I have a hard time believing that was the issue. The waiter went back and forth checking on the food, presumably and letting us know it was still in the oven. I don't think a lamp could do what was done to that stuffed potato.
They have also faced numerous other challenges in recent weeks. She said she wasn't making excuses, but she did tell them to me.
quote:
a fryer went out, an AC unit went out, the dishwasher caught fire, a breaker box broke, a main panel went out, and we lost our main cook to health issues and we are caregivers.
That's a lot to deal with in a few weeks, though others have indicated disappointment before then.
Lori sounded sincere in that she was going to look into my concerns and said when they fail, you won't find anyone else who will work harder to fix things. I'm sure she will try to do so, so maybe someone here will give it a try and let us know.
She wanted my address and my niece's address to send something. (My niece recently moved to Lafayette and she and her bf ate there a few days before we did at my urging. Neither enjoyed the meal.) I declined the offer. I wasn't trying to get anything. I was just letting them know after Blaze said he would have asked for one of the owners. They were clearly not in the restaurant at the time, but in reading the website, I believe they want this family owned restaurant to do well and they are working at it. I hope they turn things around. If I go again, I'll order differently.
