I am new to the F&D board so if this has been discussed to death my apologizes.

What are thoughts on these grill/smokers? If price is no option what are you getting and why? If you have one of them what are your pros/cons with the one you have.

TIA

I got a BGE for my birthday/fathers day this year. I love it, and I have not used my other grills or smoker since I got it.

I've seen others on here say that the Kamodo Joe is just as good as the BGE but for the same price you get a lot more accessories than the BGE

I would buy a Primo XL. The oval shape is more practical for what you would typically cook on a smoker(ribs, brisket, pork butts etc). I have a Large BGE and my only complaint is that the circular shape inhibits using the entire cooking grate. It's also not an XL BGE. Other than that, it's fine.

Yeah I love my large BGE but the oval shape of the primo may be better.

Here is a scorching hot take: they are pretty much exactly the same. Very little difference in output, capability, functionality, etc... Hell you can build a ceramic cooker with some large ceramic pots from Home Depot.

I find the BGE/Primo/Kamado Joes are all much better as grills than as smokers (meaning high heat is where they shine). Smoking wise, I just dont think you can replicate a traditional offset smoker or a Carolina style wood direct heat pit with a BGE or its proteges.

I also have a L BGE, and it is very good and the service from my local dealer has been great. I many use it for grilling, and when I smoke on it I usually do chicken or brats and maybe a pork butt. However also have a dedicated smoker for ribs, brisket and pork butt. I just dont think it would work to well especially for brisket and spare ribs would be a tough fit. Not familiar with the Primo.

When I first bought my Egg the only accesories I got were the Eggmate shelves. I then went back and got a Egg Handler and a extendable grill grate for wings. He still gave me a 15 percent discount even though I had bought the Egg 6 months prior. I also had a problem with my bands on the lid. I put it together and couldnt get it exactly perfect. He had a guy come out at no cost and get it lined up perfectly.

I've had brisket and ribs done on an Egg many times. Delicious every time. You can use a rib rack for the ribs.

Primo XL cooks the following very well.

brisket and spare ribs

Really depends on how much meat one is usually cooking. If you are cooking 100 lbs of brisket, yeah, you need something bigger than an XL ceramic, but how many people do that here for themselves, family, or some friends? I don't miss my horizontal smoker at all after 10 years of the same Primo XL with very little maintenance.

I looked at all of them recently and went with the Kamado Joe. It was a little more than the BGE but had more features I liked. The Primo XL had a better shape but seemed cheaply built compared to the others. I got the 24"

I smoke stuff on my KJ all the time ribs, brisket, pork butt you name it. Comes out great.everytime. I can go low and slow for 14 hrs on one load of charcoal. I'm not sure how you could say it's not an effective smoker.
