Rabideaux’s Sausage Alternative for Gumbo
Posted on 10/17/21 at 7:26 am

I moved the Mandeville last year and I can no longer get Rabideaux’s Sausage which is made out of Iowa near Lake Charles. This sausage was the best I have ever had in my gumbo. I have tried several locally (Rouses's smoked, Country Pleasin, and probably a few more) but they made the gumbo taste pretty abnormal. Do you guys have any recommendations I can try?
My go to back in the day was Savoie's but I am hoping that there is something better.

Well if you live on the northshore then get in your car and drive to LaPlace to Jacob's World Famous Andouille. That's the best andouille you can buy period and they have great smoked pork sausage too...get you smoked chicken thighs for good measure...you will elevate your gumbo skills tremendously just with these ingredients.....no savoie's ..rabbdieaux's oversmoked shite ...

Sam's supposedly carries it. My Sam's says "out of stock."

Try French Settlement. Some Rouse's carry it.

Albertson's in BR has Best Stop sausage. Not sure if they're carrying that at all locations, though

My opinion nothing East of the MS River will be near the taste you are looking for.
Not sure if Rabideaux's ships or not, but I believe Teet's does out of Ville Platte and Lejeune's Sausage Kitchen out of Eunice does as well.
EDIT: Oak Grove Smokehouse in Prairieville is supposed to be good from what I've heard, but I have never had any sausage from there because each time I pass they are never open

Rabideaux's smoked andouille is the GOAT.
The River Parishes offerings are ok but will disappoint.
I haven't tried the French Settlement ones so that might be an option. As for mass marketed brands, try New Orleans Smoked Sausage or Tony Chaceries. Both made by the same company.
That said, some great little seafood markets on the Northshore.

Wayne Jacobs in LaPlace has the GOAT andouille for gumbo.
Veron’s smoked sausage(not their andouille) is a solid grocery store alternative. Really like the Veron’s sausage in jambalaya.

I tried the smoked andouille from Kartchner's and was pleasantly surprised

Wayne Jacob's got rocked by Ida, looking like they're rebuilding but it will be a minute. Cox's Market is about 2 miles west on river road, they've been open for over a month now. All the andouille in LaPlace is great, hope they're all back in action soon!

Rouses has started carrying Best Stop Sausage, Andouille, Tasso and Boudin at all its locations.

If you're gonna send someone to LaPlace or up the river to Lutcher who's accustomed to Rabideaux's that's kinda harsh.
