I have always used BBQ Guru and had to buy a new one recently. Had been 5 years or more since I bought my previous one. Got the new one in and it’s a piece of crap. Absolutely will not sense the pit temp correctly. Thinks it is much cooler than it actually is. I almost ruined my first cook with it. Ended up having to do my cook the old school way, which sucked since I was doing an overnight cook. Anywho, I emailed BBQ Guru and they said they will only take it back if all parts are in original condition and that there will be no refunds (or exchanges? Still waiting on a clarification 2 weeks later) for any components that have been used in the smoker. I asked them how exactly I would know it’s defective unless I use it in my smoker! Again, still waiting on an answer.

So, what systems have y’all had good luck with?

Egg Genius

Never had a problem with the egg genius. Routinely do 225 degree 10-14 hour pork butt/ brisket smokes with no problem

I have the Billows from Thermoworks and it’s been great. I’ve never used any other temperature controllers though.

I’ve had a ceramic cooker for 10+ years and have tried every gadget and “upgrade” and I just don’t see the point of a controller for this type of grill. I can confidently go to sleep and not worry about my Kamado with no temperature control device. I do use temp probes that can alert me but have never been woken up in the middle of the night due to run away temps or dropping temps. If you take the time and get a good heat soaked dome and have a full basket of charcoal you should be good for 12+ hours unless you’re doing high heat cooks. That’s the beauty of these types of grills.

Theyve all gotten pretty good. I did a lot of research and I went with the Smobot

It goes the longest, or rather uses less charcoal than the fan systems. It also doesnt give you the hot spikes when you open the lid. The app is super straightforward and easy to use. It also uses way less energy which enables you to use a portable battery, meaning you don’t have to worry about having access to an outlet unlike the fan systems. Their customer service is excellent. Its a great product.

Yep, I have a kamado and a WSM and have never needed a temp controller and I go to sleep very comfortably. I do the occasional MEATER probe and when I wake up, the temps hardly budge at all.

Never had a gadget, but I cook all my butts overnight on my Primo. I don't worry about it either, but I do make sure I have a full load of charcoal and there's not too much ash inside. Put it on, check the temp after 30 minutes, go to bed and don't open for 12 hours.

For cooks in the 225-250 range, I have kept it going for 36 hours before
