IMO, this is the best restaurant in the city...I will be trying Stella! in the first week of January, and it will be interesting to compare.

We split the crabmeat truffle gnocchi (which is a must) and the p & j oysters, which were very very good for apps. There were 15 oysters fixed 3 different ways, whcih was a real bargain at $14 I thought.

We split the entrees too...speckled trout served three ways (almandine, crabmeat, and with chantrelle mushrooms) was excellent as were the lamb chops. I really like the filet with smoked bone marrown better than the chops, but the chops were very good. The waiter suggested the trout over the pompano since my gf doesn't care for strong fish...the pompano is more my thing and this was her birthday.

We had a tres leches cake for dessert, which was good as well and a bottle of wine...$240...it's definitely not an everyday place at those prices, but it is worth going at least once.

Besh was in the kitchen the whole time (he came out once to talk to a big party).

Polo Club Lounge in the Windsor Court was a great way to finish the night...perhaps the best Mint Julep I have ever imbibed...thanks for the suggestions, Clooney (I think?).

Geat job TA. How was the pompano prepared that was not ordered? When pompano is done right it is one of my favorite fish.

August is fantastic. Prepare to have that meal blown away by Boswell.

Wow, I'm really surprised they gave you 15 oysters...I thought for sure it would be about 6.

Someone mentioned the crabmeat gnocchi somehow going up to $20, even though it's $12 on the online menu??

Was the tasting menu not all that great??

I like to push people to Stella! because I love New Orleans and want people to appreciate the finer things NOLA has to offer. The central grocery muff is another thing I like to pimp. Galatoire's is my favorite spot, but I can't help people with that one, it needs to be in your blood.

i hear ya, it just seems like you pimp Boswell at every opportunity....but i understand. I enjoyed my meal at Stella! more than anything else i have had in Louisiana. Boswell pushes the envelope, and not everything works.....but when it does it's great, and a GREAT change of pace from the old guard NOLA places that can bore me to death after a while.

and yes, Central Grocery is one of the few spots i have been anywhere that is loved by tourists and locals alike....and deservedly so. It's outstanding.

The tasting menu sounded okay...the dessert appealed to neither of us...I would have gotten I think, but I was letting her take the lead in ordering since it was her first time there and it was her birthday....she expressed an interest in about 5 or 6 items on the regular menu so we went with it.

I forgot how the pompano was prepared...I think it had an artichoke puree...there were 4 four fish entrees on the menu...all of which sounded great.

I am prepared for Stella! to break the bank. Here's hoping for a big Christmas bonus.

ETA: gnocchi were $19 I think...the prices of truffle bring it up or down I would think since its such a fickle crop.

I like your style, brah....I have learned to suggest it less to people, unless I am going with them.

Is this where they charged you extra or something?

yeah, $100 extra pre tax/tip for 2 of us to get some truffles shaved into the rissoto. they were good, but not needed at all as the rissotto was great as is. I tasted someone else's that didn't get the truffles and the difference wasn't nearly enough to justify the price. I don't really regret it, just wouldn't do it again.

I knew it was extra, but i didn't know how much extra until i saw the bill.

according to the waiter some kind of rare white Italian truffles. They were white in color at least. easily my dumbest food purchase in a long, long time....but hey, the wine was flowing.

That's good to hear that you had an excellent dinner at August. IMO that I was less than unimpressed when I went. I dined there about 2 years ago. About one year after Katrina hit. I truly can't even remember what I had for an entree? I remember having three petite shot glasses full of soup done three ways (that must be his thing with items cooked and presented three ways) and the soups just being way to over the top! I didn't pay for the meal, so I really can't complain too much.

I was just really not wowed. Could have been just after Katrina? Who knows, I will try him again. I do remember Besh came to the table and he was smashed and swaying back & forth while conversing with our table. At least he was having fun in the kitchen!

He was definitely hammered whenever they did the After Hours show there. I thought it was pretty funny.
