I've heard they sell live crawfish at substantially lower prices. Can anybody confirm this? JasonL?

The prices I've seen quoted on here are great, don't know about the quality though.

Decided to do it the ol fashion way. Called - $2.59/lb. Curious as to quality.

Think I'll just have to call Phillip's. $.30/lb aint worth the drive to NOLA even for 300 lbs.

The prices are usually about $.25-$.75/lb cheaper than most places when I worked there. The buy in large quantities (100-200sacks a delivery) so they can get good pricing on them. The quality was pretty much the same as everywhere when I was working there. Because they ordered in such large quantities they obviously aren't selling all selects but they are also selling for cheaper than most places. I used to keep the suppliers honest and let them know when they try to slip some peelers(smaller/cheaper crawfish the crawfish peelers use for peeling crawfish tail meat and bagging them for store use). Another thing good about restaurant depot that you won't get at most places is that you can pick out the sacks that you want. I used to put out 1 or two pallets and customers would pick through the pallets to get the better ones. This is good for the first customers but the smaller ones get left for last some times.

But just like with every crawfish dealer in the state, sometimes you get nice ones and sometimes they are just so-so. It is very hard to get "only" nice crawfish during the lenten season. Crawfish suppliers are short especially on the weekends and you take what you can get sometimes. Some consumers don't understand the "supply" side of the business though.

This can't be stressed enough. Even the "best" dealers will have bad deliveries with small crawfish or dead loss. I have family in the wholesale business and when I ask him to set aside a few "nice" sacks for me he just laughs and says "You get what I got." I don't even bother to make the one hour round trip anymore to save a few bucks.

Thanks.
$.75/lb was worth driving to NOLA for, but $.30/lb isn't.
Not looking for exclusively selects, but was just making sure they weren't strictly 3's 4's for sauces and toppings etc...

I'll probably get over there once before the season over for a big boil and other supplies.

Just for fun, here's a thread from last year in which Jason discussed the place.

As of this AM as well. Tony's is only place I called as they are generally pretty close to cheapest or within .10-.15/lb of cheapest.

Good quality. Glassman, thanks for letting me know about this place. I shop there every week now.

I paid $2.39 a pound the other day, but honestly I got some in Lulling last weekend at 2.69 a pound that were much larger.

Restaurant Depot is still a really cool place to go if you have access to a resale certificate.

Yep, I was in the wholesale seafood business since I was born and that is just the way it is when supply is tight. With hot and cold weather changes, crawfish become even more hit and miss. And just because you get so-so crawfish from one place does not mean that is all they carry. Just a pet-peve of mine when I hear people bashing a place because of the size of their crawfish during lent. Now when supplies get better, then that is a different story.
