Salt Lake is our favorite city. The food scene there is surprisingly good.
Breakfast:
The Publik Kitchen
Penny Anne’s Cafe
Ruth’s Diner
Get to all of these places early. Publik is a hipster local spin with a Starbucks feel. Expect a goth looking server and some alternative clientele. The food is very good.
Penny Anne’s Cafe is Midwest meets West. Easily some of the best pancakes I’ve ever had. Be hungry. They try to kill you with the portions here.
Ruth’s Diner is the best combination of food and atmosphere. It’s right near the university up one of the canyons. Setting is outstanding. Get the salmon hash for something different.
Casual lunch or dinner:
R&R BBQ.
The Red Iguana
The Pie Pizzeria Underground
BBQ. I know. I know. This was a very welcome taste of home. They also happen to have a location that’s walking distance to my favorite brewery in Salt Lake.
The Red Iguana is a local Mexican place that specializes in their mole sauces. They have about a dozen of them. Plan on an hour or more wait at any time you go. The line will be down the block at all times.
The Pie Underground. Please make sure you go to the right one. This location is right beside the University of Utah and is your quintessential college pizza place. The pizza is pretty good, but this is more about atmosphere.
Fine dining:
I’m only listing one here. Log Haven. This is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. The food is stellar, the service is professional and first class, and the setting is amazing. Please try to get there a little early to make sure you have some daylight. You’re going to want to take pictures.
Breweries:
Uinta Brewery
Squatters
Fischer
Uinta has good beer and is the biggest.
Squatters is your classic brewpub. Its location right downtown makes is crowded most times. Beer is solid and food is solid.
Fischer Brewing is by far my favorite. They have no distribution and you can only get the beer and swag on premise. There is always food trucks out front and it’s walking distance from R&R BBQ. My favorite brewery in Utah. Atmosphere is stellar.
If you go to Salt Lake and didn’t got to Red Iguana, Ruth’s Diner, Log Haven, and Fischer Brewing, I’d consider it a wasted trip. The public transportation there is excellent btw. The people are friendly, but it’s not the south. Tons of outdoor activities.

Please come back here and share details about the trip after the fact. I want to do something similar this summer.

I’ve only spent one day in Salt Lake City on my way to Park City, but I stopped here and it was solid. Would recommend.

I used to have to go for a business show (OR) in the 80s and 90s. There was a restaurant called “ the Broiler? ( There are really few restaurants for a town that size). This one was always crowded and had a small room inside With the kitchen and open flame grill. But outside was a large area with tables to eat. Food was mainly steaks and grilled fish. Is this place still there?

We were in Salt Lake City a few months ago and dined at:
Takashi - Sushi
Red Iguana - Mexican
Mumbai House - Indian
Krua - Thai
Edit: I see this thread was from a few years ago, which make sense for the one poster saying how much they like Salt Lake City, because I can attest the wife and I were very happy to leave after just two days there.
The amount of homeless and strung out addicts was shocking. Seeing Mormon youth weave bikes around people sleeping in the middle of the sidewalk was interesting.
Beautiful natural scenery, and Antelope Island was cool, but I have no desire to return to Salt Lake City. Especially with their "clever" marketing of SL,UT on everything.

Yea, the homelessness has become a pretty big problem there, but to be honest it’s better than a lot of major cities in the Rockies and west.
Utah is a great state though and pretty accessible. There is a ton to see and do outside of SLC so you don’t need to spend a lot of time in the city.
