Is this a decent cake for the money?
Never had one but hear they are pretty good.
Input please.

Sample one of their Gentilly cupcakes first and see if you like it. I think they're decent. Not world beating quality, but if someone likes gentilly, it's not bad at all.

It’s a good cake. A bakery could do a better job, but to be able to get one anytime, it’s great.

Get the chocolate strawberry Gentilly
Way better than the original imo

The strawberry cake from ambrosia bakery is similar, but I find it a better cake.

Whole Foods makes a pretty good one.

Yeah we get the Whole foods all the time at work. Its good but not cheap though. About $35 for the midsize cake.

This was my main reason for asking. $35 and 1hr drive one way to pick one up.
I should have added that drive time/distance into my original post.

No, he means Gentilly Cake. He did not misspeak.

The Rouses website names it Gentilly cake.

Whole Foods is much better if you don’t mind spending the money but the Rouses one is not a bad alternative for the price.

Oak Point in Central/Watson has something similar too - I’ve heard it’s better than Rouse’s Gentilly
But that cake in general is not something I like
FTR - don’t like the neighborhood either
The Ambrosia strawberry cake is really good.

Gentilly is Rouses version of a Chantilly . Same idea

Here’s the history of the cake.
Nola.com
Short version:
Owner of Bywater Bakery was working at Whole Foods uptown. She introduced a family recipe and it became a hit. Whole Foods trademarked Chantilly. Rouses hired her to run bakery program. She changed from it yellow cake to white for Rouses and named it Gentilly.

If you like the fruit, get the Rouses. If you like the idea of fruit being present, get the Amazon cake.
